The cattle population grew at an average of 3% annually and is now
estimated at about 14 million up from 11.4 in 2008
Dairy Development
Milk production in the year 2011/12 was estimated at 1.86 billion
liters. The value of exports is estimated to be about 20 million US
dollars annually.
The dairy subsector grew at an average of 9% per annum over the
last 10 years. This is attributed to the favorable macroeconomic
environment, policy and institutional reforms (liberalization and
privatization mainly) as well as specific interventions by
government to promote development of the sector.
By end of 2013 there were 347 rural milk collecting centres in
more than 13 districts with a total capacity of about 1.5 million
litres

There are over 114 milk road tankers with a total capacity of
925,170 litres.
Currently there are over 30 (45) large, medium and small-
scale dairy processing plants in the country with a combined
total installed capacity of over1,103,830 litres (1.5) per day.
Of these, about 4 have come up in the last two years. The
processed products from these plants range from
pasteurized milk, Ultra Heat Treated milk, yoghurt, butter,
cheese, milk powder, ice cream and ghee.
A total of 100,767,383 litres of milk were processed into
value added products during the year 2012

The farm-gate price of milk has moved from UGX 500-600 a
liter to UGX 1000 a liter because of improved marketing
The value of imports on the other hand, decreased from $1.9
million in 2011 to US $1.4 million in 2012.
Currently, there are 229 registered cooperatives involved in
collective milk marketing and milk chilling.
Breeding Programs
Synchronized the reproduction of over 400 heads of cattle at
Ruhengere Farm
Trained 40 artificial insemination technicians and procured
3000 doses of sexed semen and 7000 doses of conventional
semen
A high capacity liquid nitrogen plant of 89 litres per hour has
been procured and installed at NAGRC.

A business plan for Maruzi Open Nucleus Breeding
scheme was developed in 2013
Goats
Goat numbers are estimated at about 15 millions by
end of 2013
Sembabule pilot goat export and production project
(2012) procured 6,326 improved goats and
distributed to 126 farmers.
A total of 1,475,545 metric tons of wet blue goat
and sheep skins were exported in 2012 to China,
Italy, Turkey, Pakistan, Kenya and others.

Beef and Beef Products
Beef production stood at about 186,000 MT in 2011, rose to
191,280 MT in 2012.
The Uganda Meat Producers Cooperative Union established
30 primary cooperatives (14 in DCZ1 and 16 in DCZ2).
A National Meat Grading System was developed and will be
used after establishing the export slaughterhouses
Beef exports increased from 34.2 MT in 2011 to 84.6 MT in
2012 registering 147% growth.

Poultry production
The poultry population is estimated as 50.4 millions most of
which are chickens.
About 775.2 million eggs produced per year.
An average of 84,000 tons of poultry meat and 56,000 tons
of eggs were produced per year 2011 to 2013.
 Present egg per capita consumption is estimated to be at 40
and that of poultry meat at 2.5 kgs.
The quick rise in the poultry sector and sanitary
requirements have triggered investment in poultry
processing plants.
Ugachick Poultry Breeders in Magigye and Manji Hodani in
Nakaseke.
Although Uganda imported 455,462 day old chicks in 2011.
We were able to export 110,500 day old chicks in 2012.

7. Fisheries Subsector
• Fish production in 2012/13 was 407,639 MT and fish export
stood at 18,320 MT valued at USD 108.614 Million
• The number of ponds was 25,000 in 2011 and on average
1,000 ponds are established each year bringing the total
number ponds to 27,000 in 2013.
• To boost fish production from aquaculture, four (4) regional
fry centers were established in Gulu, Kajansi, Bushenyi and
Mbale and equipment procured.
The number of fish farmers increased from 14,000 in 2011
to 15,000 in 2013.
Current fish production from acquaculture is estimated at
100,000 metric tons per year.

Eight (8) appropriate sites for establishment of aquaculture
parks have been identified:
4 on Lake Victoria (Lutoboka Bay, Lutoboka-Kitobo,
Kissujja-Mwena and Mwena Main)
 4 on land (Kabouy and Onekgwak along the River Nile in
Masindi, River Ruizi in Mbarara, and River Mporogoma in
the Eastern.
The number of cage farming enterprises stands at 1350
cages
 Fish feed production is still low with one major commercial
producer – Ugachick.

Manada fish farm in Koboko District,
 Anyara Fish hatchery in Kaberamaido,

The process of identification and mapping of 25 fish breeding
on lake Victoria and 9 on Lake Albert was undertaken
Developed guidelines for the management of the fish
breeding areas.

Curbing Illegal Fishing
The process of establishing an Agriculture Police is being
concluded in FY 2013/14.
Procurement process is on-going for the initial 11,500
vessel identification number plates out of the total of
60,000 required to be procured,
Payment of mandatory country contributions to a tune of
780M to Lake Victoria Fisheries Organisation towards the
East African regional efforts to save the Nile Perch in Lake
Victoria was effected

Status on protection and conservation of wild
fisheries
The process of identification and mapping of 25 fish
breeding on lake Victoria and 9 on Lake Albert has been
undertaken
Development of guidelines for the management of the
fish breeding areas concluded.
Management of aquatic weeds and suds by removing
physical encumbrances to fish production on lake Kyoga,
Victoria, Albert and River Kagera regularly undertaken
