How effective is the
combination of your main
product (Music Video) and
ancillary texts (Digipak &
Magazine Advert)?
Music Video
As the name of the song for the music video is ‘Clean’
we tried to keep this as a key topic with in our video so
the music video went with the song. We then decided
to include nature and the elements fire, water, wind
and earth as a theme using it to express the story
behind the lyrics and to show the idea of ‘Clean’. This is
expressed in my digipak and magazine advert as the
house theme of nature and some of the elements are
shown.
The shots we used in our music video consisted of long
and wide shots that were often panned showing the
forest and the natural surroundings these are
establishing shots which set the scene of the video and
suggest what them is. With use of close ups and
medium shots of the girl walking through the forest the
theme of the elements and nature is expressed further.
We also used close ups of the rose burning to show
both nature and the element fire.
The mise-en-scene for the video shows the theme of
nature and the elements as the video was set in a
forest. The natural light was used to emphasise the
theme of nature and also add to the house style. The
only prop we used was a rose which followed the
house style as we set it on fire and poured water over it
showing the elements; earth, fire, water & wind.
This style was chosen, as it is different to other Taylor
Swift styles but still links to the genre and the song.
Representing the lyrics of the song in the video to
connect the video to the song. The audience would
interpret the video to be the story of the artist finding
her way after a bad point in her life.
Digipak & Magazine Advert
The house style within my digipak and magazine advert is the
same as the video which links the three products together.
Using photos in the same setting and costume from the music
video this keeps the house style of nature throughout. I used
the same fonts in both my digipak and magazine advert to
ensure this also links them together. The font I used for the
artist name was different to the title to resemble the artist’s
logo. The title font is then to keep a theme of the song
meaning anything to do with the song can be recognised
through that font.
Like the house style for the music video I chose this as
it is different to anything Taylor Swift has done before
and therefore was a unique selling point. Even though
she has not done anything similar before it still of the
pop genre with the light colours and so her audience
will be attracted to it. Also the unique style will draw in
the audience and make them intrigued to listen and
buy the CD.
Products together created clear synergy as each were set in
the forest, with the artist wearing the same white dress with
the wine stain and also use of the rose. These are elements
that clearly link the three products so the audience link the
three together when they see them. Then theme of nature
and the costume within the house style is unique and
therefore is associated with the products. There is a stronger
link between the magazine advert and the digipak as the fonts
used on both are the same creating a brand image for the
artist and the CD. To create a better synergy between these
two products and the music video I would use the same fonts
from the print products at the start of the video when
showing the artist name and song title so the brand image is
stronger.
These products together acted as good promotion
for the artist as it is obvious they are about the
same thing due to the house style and branding.
This means when one of the products is seen it
will immediately be associate with the product.

These are elements that clearly link the three products so the audience link the three together when they see them. Then theme of nature and the costume within the house style is unique and therefore is associated with the products. There is a stronger link between the magazine advert and the digipak as the fonts used on both are the same creating a brand image for the artist and the CD. To create a better synergy between these two products and the music video I would use the same fonts from the print products at the start of the video when showing the artist name and song title so the brand image is stronger.
