Hello, It’s Tony Fortunato And Peter Ciuffreda from the Technology Firm In this session we will be showing you how to use the free tftp server tftpd32. Enjoy
What is tftpd32? Tftpd32 is a free, portable tftp application that allows you to create DHCP, TFTP, DNS, SNTP and Syslog servers. It is also a tftp client. You can create and run any of these types of servers on a personal or private network I presume? Exactly
Why would we use tftpd32? Tftpd32 is great for doing file transfers especially when upgrading tftp devices like a router or switch. Is tftpd32 only used for transfers? No. Tftpd32 can be used to test DHCP, DNS, SNTP, and syslog . It sounds like a great tool for testing services. It sure is.
I noticed the Current Directory is blank, what does that mean? All that means is that the current direct that you use, is your… current application directory When would the Server Interface ever change? If you have multiple network interfaces, or virtual software like VMWARE, you will have different Interfaces to choose from. I don’t see the DHCP tab, what happened? The DHCP option wasn’t selected yet, that’s all.
Should I change the Base Directory? If you plan to use tftp or PXE, then, change it to the directory where those files are. Looks like a lot of stuff. Do we have to modify anything else? Not really, the defaults are fine to get up and running.
I think I understand this one. I simply make sure that I have the correct DHCP pool information, and press the Save button, correct? You got it. Just make sure you pay attention to the size of the pool and any additional options you may need. So what’s with the Current Directory? This is specific to DHCP if you have a boot file
As you can see from the example above, a tftp session is in progress. So this screen can tell me the current status of the transfer and the ip address involved. Yes, its more for just monitoring.
Now, this is very helpful when you want to simulate a tftp session as a client. Does that mean I can download a file that my router would download, and measure the total transaction time? Yes, and you could see if there are any issues downloading that file since tftp is UDP based.
I run into this issue many times when trying to use the SNTP server. Why would Microsoft complain about their time client conflicting with the server? Because it can… Its just the way it is.
Hope this Quickstart will help you get started with tftpd32. Have a good day folks, bye for now.
