It is not like behavioral psychology that concentrates is the person’s behavior and its modification. Or the cognitive psychology that seeks to identify and modify the person’s thinking patterns. Or the medical approach that sees pathology and tries to control it with medication.
We are lucky because these pioneer’s studied, practiced, and lived in the SF Bay Area. Some of them still do, like Dr. Irvin Yalom who lives in Palo Alto. The bad news is that these pioneers are getting old have already passed away. In some cases, their adult children are still around and keeping Humanistic Psychology still alive. All of us that have taken Dr. Valle Person-centered class learned about the “Forces” in the field of Psychology. The first force Psychoanalysis, the second Behaviorism, the third Humanism, and the fourth Transpersonal Psychology.
