How to do a barcode for your magazine
Step 1 – Find and download a barcode from Google
Images. Make sure that the image chosen is large

Step 2 – In InDesign, create a white rectangle in which
to build your barcode and other features

Step 3 – Create 2 text boxes and 1 picture box. The
picture box is for your downloaded barcode and the
text boxes are for your web address and your issue
number/price

Step 4 – Type in your issue details and website.
Magazines often use different colours for the website,
so have a look at what’s typical for your genre of music
magazine.

Stage 5 – Now SELECT the picture and go to FILE –
PLACE – choose your barcode picture and place it in
the box. You will have to go to OBJECT – FITTING
and choose FILL FRAME PROPORTIONALLY to get it
to fit in the box properly. Resize your box until it all fits
properly and it looks right.
Stage 6 – Once everything is in the boxes, size
everything up so that it fits snuggly and looks
professional. Then hold down SHIFT and click on all
your boxes, one at a time. Once all is selected, go to
OBJECT – GROUP and then all the barcode will
become one object
Stage 7 – Once everything is GROUPED you can
place it into position on your cover. You may want to
ROTATE the barcode so that it mirrors the ones on
your ‘inspiration’ covers. Just make sure that your
barcode is in proportion to the ones on professional
covers. That’s it!
