The document provides an overview of the petroleum industry, including defining petroleum and natural gas as raw materials extracted from the ground that are refined into usable products, listing various petroleum and petrochemical products, and discussing the upstream processing and general refining processes used to produce petroleum products.

2. LEARNING OUTCOME
1. Identify the type of raw material used in oil and gas
industry
2. List petroleum and petrochemical products.
3. Discuss the refining processes for the production of
petroleum products
3. DEFINITION
1. Petroleum is a complex mixture of organic liquid called crude oil
and natural gas. Its varies of color and composition
2. Crude oil and natural gas are extracted from the ground, on land or
under the oceans, by sinking an oil well and are then transported
by pipeline and/or ship to refineries where their components are
processed into refined products. Crude oil and natural gas are of
little use in their raw state; their value lies in what is created from
them: fuels, lubricating oils, waxes, asphalt, petrochemicals and
pipeline quality natural gas
5. PETROLEUM AND PETROCHEMICAL
PRODUCT
1. Dry gas
-Common: methane, ethane and propane
2. Wet gas
-Common: methane (80%-90%), natural gas liquid and
natural gasoline
3. Condensate
4. Light crude oil :few natural gas liquid
5. Heavy crude oil: no natural gas liquid
6. Bitumen: Complex asphaltene
6. UPSTREAM PROCESSING
1. upstream oil sector is a term commonly used to refer to the
searching for and the recovery and production of crude oil and
natural gas. The upstream oil sector is also known as the
exploration and production (E&P) sector.
2. The upstream sector includes the searching for potential
underground or underwater oil and gas fields, drilling of exploratory
wells, and subsequently operating the wells that recover and bring
the crude oil and/or raw natural gas to the surface
3. The activities within the upstream sector are divided into different
phases consisting of
exploration, appraisal, development, production and abandonment.
7. GENERAL REFINING PROCESSES
1. Crude distillation unit
2. Vacuum distillation unit
3. Catalytic reformer unit
4. Hydrocracker unit
5. Coking units
9. ASSIGNMENT
Explain briefly one of the oil platform in Malaysia?Include the
characteristic of the platform:
1. Location. Ex Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu
2. Type of platform. Ex: Spar Platform, Floating Production System
3. Ownership: Ex: Shell, Petronas
