This intensive three-day executive program aims to introduce managers
to the High Performance Organization (HPO) Framework. The HPO
Framework is conceptual,scientifically validated structure that managers
can use to improve organizational performance and make it sustainable.

Creating a High
Performance Organization
The HPO Center and Maastricht School of Management
conducted a 10-year research project - involving 1,470
organizations in 50 countries - examining the factors of
sustainable high performance.The result of this research,
the HPO Framework, is presented in “What Makes A High
Performance Organization: Five Validated Factors Of
Competitive Advantage That Apply Worldwide” (published inCompetitive Advantage That Apply Worldwide” (published inCompetitive Advantage That Apply Worldwide”
June 2012 by Global Professional Publishing), a book by Prof.
André A. de Waal, Associate Professor at Maastricht School of
Management.The HPO Framework differs considerably from
previous frameworks on high performance as it is grounded
in scientific research and has been validated in many case
studies around the world. De Waal’s study shows that
organizations using the HPO Framework are performing
better than ever before: it pays to be an HPO!
What to expect
Maastricht School of Management (www.msm.nl) offers this
High Performance Organization (HPO) executive program in
cooperation with Maastricht University School of Business and
Economics (www.maastrichtuniveristy.nl/sbe) and the HPO
Center (www.hpocenter.com).
The duration of the course is three days. Prior to arrival to
this course participants are kindly requested to fill out the
HPO Questionnaire, and collect the following materials for
use during the training: management reports used in the
company; distribution lists within the company (who receives
what types of reports); overview of critical success factors
(CSFs) and key performance indicators (KPIs) used in the
company; and an overview of the projects conducted in
the previous year and which are currently underway.
This information will be used to conduct the HPO Diagnosis.
At the end of the program each participant will receive a
certificate of participation from the Maastricht School of
Management as well as Prof. De Waal’s book“What Makes
A High Performance Organization: Five Validated Factors Of
Competitive Advantage That Apply Worldwide”.
Training approach
This course takes an interactive approach where participants,
experts and managers exchange experiences.
The program combines classroom sessions, group assignments,
a management-employee dialogue simulation, and rounds
off with a HPO transition plan which includes interventions
to keep HPO“alive”.
Dr. André A. de Waal
André de Waal is Associate Professor High
Performance Organizations at the Maastricht
School of Management. André is also the
Academic Director of the HPO Center, an
organization which conducts research into high
performance organizations. André has been a
consultant and a partner with Arthur Andersen
for 15 years (1986-2001). He has been selected by
Managementboek.nl as one of the Dutch Masters
in Management (Hollandse Meesters in
Management),10 people who have most influenced
management thinking in the Netherlands in the
past decade. André has published 27 books and
more than 300 articles on high performance
organizations,strategic performance management,
and performance-driven behavior.

BV) is a research and inspiration
company based in Hilversum, the
Netherlands.The HPO Center was
founded as a research and management
support center, based on the five factors
directly correlated to competitive

The HPO Framework: Presentation and
in-depthdiscussionof theHPOFramework:
the five factors and 35 accompanying
characteristics, the research behind
them,what is not important/the hygiene
factors, practical implications, results to
be expected from an HPO transition
The group’s HPO Diagnosis: Presentation
and discussion of the HPO Diagnosis
results of program’s participants: overall
HPO score, what is going well, what has
to be improved, identifying the HPO
attention points.
Afternoon Session (13h30-16h30)
Working on the HPO attention points:
Participants work in groups on the
HPO attention points and address the
following questions:what are the causes
of the HPO scores,what can be done to
improve the scores, what is needed
(time, resources, knowledge), what is
the priority of the improvement actions,
how can employees be involved.
The HPO Coach Program: Presentation
and discussion on the objectives of the
HPO Program; roles, responsibilities,
activities and qualifications of HPO
Coaches.

Day 2
Morning Session (09h00-12h00)
Practicalities of being an HPO Coach:
Discussion of the practical issues that
an HPO Coach can (and will) encounter
while performing HPO Coach duties.
Working on HPO factor Continuous
Improvement:performance management:
Improving performance management
is common to all organizations.The
following activities will be undertaken:
a. Explanation theory behind good
performance management;
b. Participants team up per two and
review each other´s management
reports and CSFs and KPIs; each
participant makes suggestions for
improvement to the other participant.
Afternoon Session (13h30-16h30)
Continue working on performance
management
Working on HPO Coach skills: conduct-
ing a dialogue: One of key skills of an
HPO Coach is the ability to conduct a
dialogue: this entails both facilitating
the dialogue between management
and employees and conducting a
dialogue themselves. In this section
participants will do exercises in
dialogue and will learn how to
facilitate the dialogue.

Day 3

Short review of acquired learnings
Working on HPO factor Continuous
Improvement: process improvement
management: Improving processes
is common to all organizations.The
following activities will be undertaken:
a. Explanation of the theory behind
successful process improvement;
b. Participants fill in the Improving
the Process of Process Improvement
checklist;
c. Participants team up per two, one
participant presents his or her project
overview, while the other participant
makes comments;
d. Participants switch places and repeat
activity b;
e. In a plenary session each team of two
participants presents their Top 3 tips
for achieving successful process
improvement.
Afternoon Session (13h30-16h30)
The HPO transition: Presentation on
approach and interventions which can
be made during the transition to HPO.
Working on HPO Coach’s skills: be the
HPO pioneer: Another key skill of an
HPO Coach is the capacity to be a
pioneer during the HPO transformation
process: this entails taking initiatives,
giving feedback, being critical, not
giving up and injecting enthusiasm and
energy into the organization. In this
section each participant will make an
HPO transition plan which includes
interventions to keep HPO“alive”.
Setting up the HPO Coaches network:
Discussion on how to best set up an HPO
Coaches network between participants.
Q&A and closing: The last questions on
HPO are asked and discussed,after which
the program is closed.

The HPO Center and Maastricht School of Management conducted a 10-year research project - involving 1,470 organizations in 50 countries - examining the factors of sustainable high performance.The result of this research, the HPO Framework, is presented in “What Makes A High Performance Organization: Five Validated Factors Of Competitive Advantage That Apply Worldwide” (published inCompetitive Advantage That Apply Worldwide” (published inCompetitive Advantage That Apply Worldwide” June 2012 by Global Professional Publishing), a book by Prof. André A. de Waal, Associate Professor at Maastricht School of Management.The HPO Framework differs considerably from previous frameworks on high performance as it is grounded in scientific research and has been validated in many case studies around the world. De Waal’s study shows that organizations using the HPO Framework are performing better than ever before: it pays to be an HPO! What to expect Maastricht School of Management (www.msm.nl) offers this High Performance Organization (HPO) executive program in cooperation with Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (www.maastrichtuniveristy.nl/sbe) and the HPO Center (www.hpocenter.com). The duration of the course is three days. Prior to arrival to this course participants are kindly requested to fill out the HPO Questionnaire, and collect the following materials for use during the training: management reports used in the company; distribution lists within the company (who receives what types of reports); overview of critical success factors (CSFs) and key performance indicators (KPIs) used in the company; and an overview of the projects conducted in the previous year and which are currently underway. This information will be used to conduct the HPO Diagnosis. At the end of the program each participant will receive a certificate of participation from the Maastricht School of Management as well as Prof. De Waal’s book“What Makes A High Performance Organization: Five Validated Factors Of Competitive Advantage That Apply Worldwide”. Training approach This course takes an interactive approach where participants, experts and managers exchange experiences. The program combines classroom sessions, group assignments, a management-employee dialogue simulation, and rounds off with a HPO transition plan which includes interventions to keep HPO“alive”. Dr. André A. de Waal André de Waal is Associate Professor High Performance Organizations at the Maastricht School of Management. André is also the Academic Director of the HPO Center, an organization which conducts research into high performance organizations. André has been a consultant and a partner with Arthur Andersen for 15 years (1986-2001). He has been selected by Managementboek.nl as one of the Dutch Masters in Management (Hollandse Meesters in Management),10 people who have most influenced management thinking in the Netherlands in the past decade.   • 7. Day 1 Morning Session (09h00-12h00) Meet the participants: The participants introduce themselves and their expectations from the program. The HPO Framework: Presentation and in-depthdiscussionof theHPOFramework: the five factors and 35 accompanying characteristics, the research behind them,what is not important/the hygiene factors, practical implications, results to be expected from an HPO transition The group’s HPO Diagnosis: Presentation and discussion of the HPO Diagnosis results of program’s participants: overall HPO score, what is going well, what has to be improved, identifying the HPO attention points. Afternoon Session (13h30-16h30) Working on the HPO attention points: Participants work in groups on the HPO attention points and address the following questions:what are the causes of the HPO scores,what can be done to improve the scores, what is needed (time, resources, knowledge), what is the priority of the improvement actions, how can employees be involved. The HPO Coach Program: Presentation and discussion on the objectives of the HPO Program; roles, responsibilities, activities and qualifications of HPO Coaches. Dinner Day 2 Morning Session (09h00-12h00) Practicalities of being an HPO Coach: Discussion of the practical issues that an HPO Coach can (and will) encounter while performing HPO Coach duties. Working on HPO factor Continuous Improvement:performance management: Improving performance management is common to all organizations.The following activities will be undertaken: a. Explanation theory behind good performance management; b. Participants team up per two and review each other´s management reports and CSFs and KPIs; each participant makes suggestions for improvement to the other participant. Afternoon Session (13h30-16h30) Continue working on performance management Working on HPO Coach skills: conduct- ing a dialogue: One of key skills of an HPO Coach is the ability to conduct a dialogue: this entails both facilitating the dialogue between management and employees and conducting a dialogue themselves. In this section participants will do exercises in dialogue and will learn how to facilitate the dialogue. Q&A and wrap-up for the day Day 3 Morning Session (09h00-12h00) Short review of acquired learnings Working on HPO factor Continuous Improvement: process improvement management: Improving processes is common to all organizations.The following activities will be undertaken: a. Explanation of the theory behind successful process improvement; b. Participants fill in the Improving the Process of Process Improvement checklist; c. Participants team up per two, one participant presents his or her project overview, while the other participant makes comments; d. Participants switch places and repeat activity b; e. In a plenary session each team of two participants presents their Top 3 tips for achieving successful process improvement. Afternoon Session (13h30-16h30) The HPO transition: Presentation on approach and interventions which can be made during the transition to HPO. Working on HPO Coach’s skills: be the HPO pioneer: Another key skill of an HPO Coach is the capacity to be a pioneer during the HPO transformation process: this entails taking initiatives, giving feedback, being critical, not giving up and injecting enthusiasm and energy into the organization. In this section each participant will make an HPO transition plan which includes interventions to keep HPO“alive”. Setting up the HPO Coaches network: Discussion on how to best set up an HPO Coaches network between participants. Q&A and closing: The last questions on HPO are asked and discussed,after which the program is closed. “This approach is rigorous and based on a close systematic examination of the facts across time, cultures and different industries.
