Uch Sharif
The city of Uch Sharif has a
long history with links to
Alexander the Great and
ancient Hindu culture. The
city is located just more than
45 miles from Bahawalpur,
and contains many shrines and
tombs. The tombs have
central Asian influences, and
are decorated with blue and
white tiles. Over the
centuries, many of the shrines
have fallen into disrepair;
however, the site remains an
important religious center in
Pakistan.
Wazir Khan Mosque
The Wazir Khan Mosque in Lahore
dates back to 1634. Shaikh Ilm-ud-
din Ansari built the mosque atop
the tomb of the 13th-century
saint Syed Muhammed Ishaq. More
than just a religious structure, the
original plans for the mosque and
its surrounding complex included
a bathhouse and bazaar to ensure
funding for the mosque. The
building of a minaret at each
corner of the mosque was an
architectural first in Lahore. Much
of the mosque's brick structure is
decorated with glazed tile
mosaics.
Rohtas Fort
Rohtas Fort is located just less
than 70 miles from Islamabad.
The 16th-century Afghan ruler
Sher Shah Suri ordered
construction of this military
fortress as a base of operations
for conflicts with the Gakkhars.
Architects adapted the building
plans to the surrounding terrain,
using deep ravines as defensive
structures. The rampart walls
stretch more than 2 miles in
circumference, and include 68
bastions and 12 gates. At their
thickest point near the Mon Gate,
the walls are 36 feet thick.
Lahore Fort and Shalamar Gardens

In 2000, the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
added the Fort and Shalamar Gardens in
Lahore to its List of World Heritage in Danger.

The two monuments date back to the Mughal
civilization that ruled the area from the 16th
to 19th centuries. Within the fort are marble
palaces and ornately decorated mosques. The
garden spans three terraces and includes
scenic waterfalls, ornamental ponds and
lodges. Destruction of the 375-year old water
tanks that supplied the gardens in 1999 and
its deteriorating outer walls prompted the
Pakistani government to request assistance
from UNESCO to preserve the Mughal
monuments.
