DISCRIMINATION BY
CULTURE AND BELIEFS
Cultural Discrimination
It’s the case of indigenous people,
migrants and religious minorities.
• Physical characteristics
• Color
• Dress
• Language
• Socioeconomic status
• Customs and traditions
Why are indigenous
discriminated?
In America, countries with large
indigenous population are:
• Mexico, with about l0 million
• Peru, with 8 million
• Bolivia, more than 4 million
• Ecuador, with about 5 million
• United States, with over 2 million.
How do the indigenous suffer the
discrimination?
• Social distancing of their culture and customs
• Deliberate exclusion from the labor market
• Forced displacement to make way for tourism
development
• Harassment and death of their leaders and / or
members.
Immigrants
Those who discriminate are afraid of
the loss of identity and proclaim the
superiority of their own culture.
How do the immigrants suffer the
discrimination?
• Beatings, torture and humiliation
• Violation of due process to capture and deport them
• Use of their vulnerability to economic gain or sexual
satisfaction.
Religious Discrimination
There are numerous cases of people
who are discriminated by their
inclination towards a particular religion.
How discrimination affect religious
communities?
• Access to public education
• Health services
• Public office
• Some of them are arrested
• Lost of their lives because of their
religious affiliation.
The most tragic example of this
would be the genocide conducted
by Nazi Germany during the 1930
and 1940 to annihilate the Jewish
population of Europe.
The atrocity of discrimination occurs
also in Christian organizations.
We live in a society where there is
unequal rights throughout the world.
Discrimination against atheists
People associate atheism with
immorality, criminal behavior, and
elitism.
Forms of discrimination or violation of their
human rights:
• Imposition of Catholicism from the government
• Intrusion of religion in politics
• Social rejection and imposition of offensive qualifiers to those who profess no religion
• Transmission of religious messages on news programs
