Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492 hoping to find a route to Asia but instead discovered what became known as the Americas. Over the course of four voyages, Columbus explored the Caribbean islands and parts of Central and South America, establishing a colony on Hispaniola. Though he failed to find a direct trade route to Asia, Columbus played a major role in the European colonization of the Americas.
