Mobile and tablet web design needs to be simple and user-friendly as people increasingly access the internet through these devices. According to research, mobile devices will surpass PCs as the most common way to access the internet by 2013. Therefore, websites need to have a good mobile presence to not fall behind. Southwest Airlines is cited as having a good mobile site, while the Fox News mobile site is poor. The key point is that mobile and tablets are growing rapidly so websites should adapt their design for these platforms.

Mobile/Tablet Design Importance

  1. The traditional ways to use the Internet are through PCs or Laptops.
  2. Desktop web design has a very relaxed feel to it. It allows users to explore on their own time and contains lots of content.
  3. Lately, the Internet has be accessed more and more through smart phones or tablets.
  4. Mobile web design should be more simple and clear cut. Users usually have an idea of what they are looking for.
  5. Even though the Internet is accessed more through mobile and tablets, how they use the Internet is different. Mobile users usually are more transaction oriented and have an idea of what they are looking for. Tablet users are more focused on the broader experience and are doing more leisure surfing.
  6. Most business develop websites first then the mobile site. This way might need to be switched soon. A study showed that by 2013 the Internet will be accessed more through mobile devices and tablets then through the traditional PC.
  7. Southwest Airlines does a great job with its desktop site and mobile site. You can see from the image that the desktop site has lots of content and the mobile site is slimmed way down and is short, simple, but still user friendly.
  8. Fox news mobile site is one that needs work. Its desktop website is recognized by mobile devices so you don’t get redirected to its mobile site. Pretty much a waste of a mobile site.
  9. With mobile devices and tablets becoming more and more popular you don’t want to be stuck in the past with just a desktop website. Focus more on mobile development since users are starting to access the Internet from their mobile devices and tablets.
