1. Who
Am
I?
Two
quotes
graced
the
foreword
to
my
PhD
thesis
many
years
ago
and
are
the
foundation
of
my
work
philosophy:
1.
“The
pursuit
of
knowledge
begins
with
the
admission
of
ignorance.”-‐
Unknown
I
am
eager
to
learn
new
things
and
believe
that
the
more
we
learn,
the
more
we
realize
how
little
we
truly
know;
that
learning
is
a
lifelong
process
that
makes
work
enjoyable,
and
is
critical
for
high
performance,
continuous
improvement
and
innovation.
2.
“Knowing
is
not
enough.
We
must
apply.”
-‐Johann
Wolfgang
von
Goethe
As
a
materials
scientist,
I
hoped
to
apply
my
knowledge
and
skills
to
create
tangible
value
in
society
within
my
lifetime.
I
often
thought
about
the
role
of
academia,
relative
to
industry
and
mainstream
society.
This
led
me
to
3
key
questions:
1)
Research/Academia:
What
is
possible
with
technology?
2)
Society:
What
is
desirable
to
the
end
user?
3)
Industry/Businesses:
What
is
viable
in
the
marketplace?
Design,
desire
and
a
little
luck,
enabled
me
to
traverse
this
framework
and
brought
me
from
research
into
innovation,
startups,
commercialization,
public
private
partnerships,
business
development,
markets
and
strategy.
