1. Evaluation Question 2: How
effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary texts?
By James Bowman-Spink
2. Introduction
• Throughout the process of building my main
product and ancillary texts my main aim was
to make them all relate to each other
maintaining brand identity.
• This had to be done not only accordingly to the
content but also by the layout and font and
colour etc.
3. Colour and Font
• I started off experimenting trying to find a colour that relayed
the horror theme. Eventually I settled with the idea of blood
red or bright white text set against a black background.
• I also decided to go with a font which was serif. I noticed that
many horror poster, trailers and magazine front covers all had
serif fonts and often gothic fonts. I experimented a lot with
many different gothic styles before I decided to eventually
settle with the simple Times New Roman Font.
• However in my Trailer I made the font slightly different in
style, adding a glowing effect to it but still
keeping the red Times New Roman font
and the black background which
maintained brand identity.
4. Examples
• As you can see used the same
here, I have leery, Times New
Roman font which portrays a
certain style typical of a horror
poster. I have made it white to
stand out against the black
background and have made the
main title of poster blood red,
which again promotes
connotations of evil and danger,
and also makes the name jump
out maintaining brand identity.
5. Images
• As I played the serial killer in my trailer, and I also play his twin. This means I
am prevalent throughout the trailer and am in almost every scene. At the
beginning of the trailer the plot revolves completely around my character
Gilbert so he is at the centre of every scene, and throughout the rest it is a
compilation of scenes where I am the serial killer coming to enact my revenge.
Myself being viewed in this central way mean the audience associate me as the
central image for the movie so when they see me they think of the movie.
• For this reason I used images of myself for my poster and front cover of my
magazine. I decided to base my poster image on the poster for Friday the 13th,
where we see Jason stood in the woods with the light coming from behind him,
casting a shadow on his face. I did this because in a way my character and
Jason are similar in the fact they are both twisted characters in some way
wronged, seeking revenge not for themselves but for a family member.
• For my Magazine Front Cover I decided to include an extreme close up of my
face. The idea behind it being an extreme close up was that it would be
imposing and intimidating-as if my character was invading the audience’s
personal space. I felt this to be very effective in capturing the audience’s
attention.
6. Examples
• I took my close up of myself in the dark with a white light
shining down from above, casting a shadow upon me, which
emphasised the various features of my face, giving the image a
grater sense of depth perception ultimately making my
character more intimidating.
7. Examples
• Here is my poster and the inspiration for my poster: Friday the 13th. Here I just stood in
front of the wall, with powerful lights behind me. I then edited the image so the wall and
lights cannot be seen. I tried to make the light into a spooky, murky glow.
