2. The trailer is about a film about a man and is daughter who go to a yard
sale. The daughter wants to keep an old box she finds that turns out to be a
Dybbuk box (A box which by Jewish folk law is an old wine cabinet that
contains a demon). The demon inside possesses the little girl and the
father tries to find help for her.
The around the beginning of the trailer when the mood changes the
sentence ‘Based on a true Story’ Comes up. This creates an uneasy mood
amongst the audience straight away. People think: ‘well if this happened to
them in real life it could happen to me!’. This is a frightening prospect
which puts the audience in the victims shoes, almost compelling them to
watch on and see what happens. However, being based on a true story can
mean anything. For example, the ‘true story’ happened to be that someone
bought the box and when they opened it their their hair fell out and they
had nightmares. This continued to happen to the next few owners of the
box until someone supposedly resealed the demon in the box and hid it.
There was no mention of child-snatching demons, hands coming out of
people’s mouths, furniture flying or little creatures inside people’s bodies,
but the fact that it drew the basic idea from that ‘true story’ gives them the
power to right ‘based on a true story’ an thus scare people even more.
3. The first on scene shot we get is of the Mother’s house, which is very
large and beautiful with an open garden and lots of trees. We then see
an establishing shot of the father and the daughter (the protagonist)
together. We see the mother nagging him about making sure the
daughter eats well and specifies: ‘No pizza’. We then immediately see a
pizza delivery car pull away from the father’s house. His house is far
smaller more modern and more plain. There is a kid of dazzling, lucid
light in the scene where she goes to the yard sale and finds the box. The
lighting is sharp creating shadows and the clouds are a vivid yellow
colour, creating a creepy, lucid environment. The lighting in the house
with the box is intensely sharp and cold, generating intense shadows
and creating a cold-creepy atmosphere. This effect continues in other
parts of the trailer creating the same effect. From that scene on there
are many shots in the dark generating a dark cynical atmosphere.
4. Throughout the beginning of the trailer there are many fade cuts
creating a smooth flow of transitions from shot to shot. This creates a
calm atmosphere before the trailer turns more cynical and horrific. At
the scene where the girl is opening her box for the first time, the
transitions go from fade cuts to jump cuts creating a fast-paced rhythm
to the fluidity of the trailer and generating a more horrific atmosphere
to the trailer. It then goes back to mainly fade cuts when the action
lessons but then goes back to fast-paced jump cuts and the speed of
the transitions gradually increases creating a fast moving compilation
of horrific shots which increase the feeling of anxiety and anticipation
in the audience. There is a shot reverse shot to show the Father and
Mother talking.
5. The trailer starts off with slow xylophone playing off screen which creates a calm relaxing
atmosphere, as the trailer establishes the equilibrium at the start. The soundtrack consisting of
xylophone continues to play softly in the background allowing for the audience to hear mainly
the diagetic noise in the trailer. However when the girl stabs her father in the hand with a fork
the music suddenly becomes louder with one big beat signalling the increase in beat and
tempo. At this point there is also the sound effect of lightening striking which adds to the
mood and suspense. From here on the beat tempo and volume of the soundtrack increases as
the intensity of the mise-en-scene. Also other instruments begin to be used more and more, as
well of the use of a quire which both add to the sound of the soundtrack and to create a
dark, supernatural atmosphere. The music increases at certain points when something ‘scary’
happens. For example when the girl throws a glass at her mother in the kitchen then screams at
her, or when she turns and looks at her father after looking in the mirror and there being a
different reflection. This is done to create tension and dramatic impact on the audience. Before
the end of the trailer all the non-diagetic sound stops and the emphasis is put on the girl
checking herself in the mirror. A strange horrific sound is made when the two fingers come
out of her mouth, which helps to reinforce the horrific atmosphere this shot creates. The sound
track continues lightly in the background such as before as the title and end credits some to the
screen
