One major task in virtually every predictive modelling project is to find the method best suited for the problem on hand. Luckily, most of the time data scientists can rely on one of the many already existing and well established methods such as Random Forests, Gradient Boosting Machines, Neural Networks or Support Vector Machines to solve a variety of regression and classification problems. However, in some cases these standard approaches are not directly applicable to the problem on hand and data scientists need to become creative. In this talk, we will present a case study about a project we recently conducted for the databyte GmbH in Germany. As one of the leading business information providers, databyte maintains a vast database of several million companies, containing information such as revenue, size and many other properties. The aim of the project was to develop an application which, after provided with the customer base of a databyte client, would be able to score companies in the databyte database in order to identify the most promising contacts for direct marketing campaigns. While developing this application, we were facing two major requirements: first of all, each client has its own customer base, hence we could not just train one model; in fact, the algorithm must be able to “train itself” in every run. Secondly, the customer base only contains “positive data”, that means we are dealing with a so-called positive-unlabelled-problem.

There is no doubt about it: A variety of methods which are easy to access can make R a valuable tool for plenty application scenarios in business, e.g. optimizing sales campaigns by scoring potential customers, predicting machine failures with patterns from sensor data or forecasting weather conditions in order to have some guidance for the trade and supply of energy. The knowledge in these kinds of scenarios has emerged from the young discipline of data science and is based on contemporary methods of data mining and predictive analytics. At the same time there are many more application scenarios for R which are not directly connected to data science but are substantially impacted by classical analytics used in business and particularly in industry, for example in process controls, process validation or cyclic reports. In our actual investigation our goal was to compare the inhabited areas of Székesfehérvár and Veszprém based on social claims. To survey the opinion of people we used a questionnaire. Our investigations were based on GIS so we represented the results of the questionnaire in form of geoinformatic layers so that we could model the opinion of residents. The histories of these cities show numerous similarities. We can also find identities and detect many parallels between the opinion of respondents of the two cities. The distance seems to be the main factor which influences the judgement of inhabited areas. The boundary of Veszprém in the narrow sense - thus if we do not consider those parts (former villages), which were annexed later to the city - is everywhere within 3 kilometres from the city centre. In case of Székesfehérvár this value is about 5-5,5 km. That is why in Veszprém the average score is of the inhabited area is double of the same value of Székesfehérvár. Presented by Zita Bognár

In this research the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index was used to enhance and map the open water features in a Hungarian sample area. Two Landsat-7 ETM+ images from 23. April and 30. September 2000 were used to derive the final maps. The sample area is highly endangered by excess water inundation therefore the rapid mapping of water surfaces is necessary. As result the MNDWI can be used for quick mapping, the result maps matched the distrubution of water closely. Presented by Balázs Boglárka, assistant professor at Debrecen University

We present a new method and file format which allows to create, store and manipulate multiresolution raster images. Multiresolution raster image (mri) are unlike the “classic” raster images. An mri file is a regular text file, conformed xml 1.0 standard and allows: • to store raster based images with different resolution in the same file and in the same time (i.e.: allows to contain rasters with different size in the same image); • to export easily any part of the image as a separate raster image and to import an image as a part of a raster; • to define geographical reference for a raster image and use this image as a raster based GIS model; • to perform computations (i.e. image manipulation) on the content of the file. It is an important characteristic of the mri format that mathematical operations could be performed always in the same resolution as the current resolution of the given part of the image. To confirm this statement we present how to perform a convolution on an mri file. There are many raster based file formats nowadays, but at least in one point all of them are very similar to each other: the image contained by the file, has only one resolution on the entire image. This means that number of pixels of the image unambiguously can be computed knowing dimensions of this image (columns and rows). When the hardware used for displaying this image also known, the actual resolution can be defined as DPI. Hence, because the resolution in a separate parts of an image can not be changed, there is no way to store image data with different resolution in the same image. In case where two or more different resolution raster image of the same object is to be used, separate images with the adequate resolution has to be created – one file for each resolution, or at least one layer for each resolution. Sewer maintenance workers are sensors for a lot of sewer specific phenomena like sedimentary depositions, smell, damage, danger, amount of work and best practice. The knowledge of these factors is important for optimized rehabilitation and maintenance concepts. Sewer maintenance workers put their data into a GIS based tool and they get back information about sewers which have to be maintained next. Subsequently the data are used in hydrodynamic and prognosis models to include operational experience in the planning processes of an optimized long term sewer rehabilitation. In Graz the sewers are now GIS based maintained. The long term strategy is to get low-maintenance sewers to be able to increase the maintenance quality followed by an increase of the lines span of life. GGL is a programming language designed specifically to solve geoprocessing problems by means of scripts. It is simpler and more powerful than general purpose languages since it hides most of the complexities of software development and, at the same time, provides the user with specific constructions to process rasters, join tables, etc. One key advantage of GGL is that scripts can be reused from other scripts very easily so that each problem has to be solved just once, thus building an incremental base of geoprocessing knowledge. This geoprocessing knowledge can be applied in a wide variety of scenarios by using the command line GGL interpreter directly or through the APIs, which are useful to embed GGL geoprocesses in applications. As geoprocesses are scripts collaboration is quite easy. People can send geoprocesses in mails, make corrections, teach, give technical support, etc. And where there is collaboration there is a community of users. The greater the community is, the more probable is that someone has already solved your geoprocessing problem or a similar one that can be adapted with few changes. By its simplicity and collaborative nature, GGL brings the advantages of open source development to the geoprocessing users.

inp.PINS is an application developed to automatically link Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). SWMM is a public domain software, developed by the US-EPA, widely used for planning, analysis and design of drainage systems. As it is based on physical models, GIS with all the complex functions and modules available is extremely useful to characterize the SWMM base input model, and it is also a powerful tool to store, access, manipulate and visualize the SWMM inputs and results. inp.PINS has been applied for floodplain mapping (delineation of flood hazard maps) and reveals to be an efficient way to link GIS with SWMM. The interoperability achieved is very effective for the analysis required, since the process leads to an excellent characterization of the catchment and all model inputs, and a better analysis of the modelling results, taking advantage of both GIS and SWMM capabilities at the same time. inp.PINS is based on MapWinGIS.ocx and is now driven by the community needs the open source community is able to improve the capabilities, and also to make it even more flexible and this communication intends to present and discuss future developments on this project.

In rural South India, over the years, there has been a steady increase in ground water crises. To resolve these crises, participatory water management by increasing community involvement is essential. Participatory GIS can empower rural communities for such a role by facilitating better visualization and easier understanding. Towards this goal, as part of a Government of India funded a project, open source Quantum GIS software was simplified for use by village people. It was demonstrated in an upland village of South India and was evaluated for its ease-of-use in terms of how easily people could use it for producing and using maps and for its effectiveness in creating easier understanding and better decisions.

The Ktunaxa RMS is an open source web GIS application which does referral management for the Ktunaxa Nation Council. When someone want to do a project on the territory of the Ktunaxa people, a referral will need to be evaluated using this system. This analysis is guided using the application, evaluating the Ktunaxa values. This involves mostly spatial aspects. The presentation demonstrates the application and how it was built. The application uses many open source projects, including Geomajas, Hibernate Spatial, Activiti, Alfresco. The presentation focusses on the spatial aspects and integration (but the other integrations will also be mentioned).

It does not require browser plugins, making it very suitable for large enterprises and government. The framework has a tight integration between the application back-end and front-end allow high performance and strong security. It can integrate with many data sources. Development is in one language (Java). This makes it easier to build your team as one technology is sufficient and gives you a large pool of potential developers (Java). The framework is modular. There are more than 20 plug-ins offering various enhancements to the core. There are also some additional libraries which can easily be reused in other environments.
