6. Challenges
Hospitals often lose 15% or more of their assets each year
Asset utilization rates average 35-40% in hospitals, while
equipment search times may average 30 minutes per piece
Up to 50% of the time a biomedical engineer finds a piece of
equipment for maintenance it is in use or scheduled for use and
cannot be taken
A hospital with 300 refrigerators and freezers, with each unit
checked three times per day at five minutes per check would cost
a hospital over $1.3 million in labor each year
Annual hospital inventory management can take one FTE 25% of
the year to complete

Equipment cannot be located on
time leading to non compliance
with regulatory requirements
Valuable staff time spent on
searching for assets due for PM
Asset’s availability is unknown
Recall management requires
immediate action

13. Temperature/Humidity Monitoring
Temperature Monitoring
Blood, drugs, vaccines, food and tissue samples in refrigerators and
freezers require maintaining daily records
Humidity Monitoring
Poor humidity levels in OR’s, patient and storage rooms can cause
bacteria, fungus, mites, asthma, respiratory infections and chemical
interactions
Nursing, Lab, Pharmacy and Dietary staff perform manual
temperature and humidity monitoring and logging each day
Logging mechanisms are unreliable (lost data, gaps in data) and often
expensive
Labor is utilized inefficiently
www.aeroscout.com Page 13
15. Patient & Staff Safety
No effective way to determine the
location of medical emergencies that
occur out-of-room
Hospital staff may often work with
patients that pose a risk to staff
At-risk patients (Trauma, behavioral
health, Alzheimer, elderly, etc.)
wandering and elopement

21. How Does it Work?
1. Wi-Fi-Based Active RFID tags send a tiny wireless 802.11 signal at a regular
interval
Tag’s messages consume less than 1/2msec, tags do not associate with Wi-Fi access
points and do not require thousands of IP addresses
2. Signal is received by the Wi-Fi access points, and is sent to a Location Engine
3. The Location Engine determines the tag’s location, and sends it to the visibility
software
4. Visibility software uses location data to display maps and reports, enable
searches, create alerts, manage assets, etc.
