Knowledge organization
• B. Sosińska-Kalata: Research and practice area related to
tools preparation, which aim is to provide quick and
efficient access to knowledge resources;
• KOS: structures, tools and methods used to knowledge
organization in various types of environments and for a
variety of specific objectives.
10Warszawa, 15-16.04.2013
KOS by B. Hjørland
• Two approaches to KOS:
• Narrow interpretation, typical for information science
(document description, indexing and classification);
• Broader interpretation, meaning social division of
mental labour, where KOS are associated with
production and distribution of „knowledge”, organization
of publications, traditions, disciplines and people in
different cultures.
11Warszawa, 15-16.04.2013
KOS in a broad sense
• Any structure that serves to confer some knowledge resources
of the organizational structure, that facilitates users to access
the knowledge (B. Sosińska-Kalata).
• Tools:
• Libraries, traditional and digital*
• Museums and e-museums
• Archives and e-archives
• Encyclopaedia and e-encyclopaedia
• Repositories of digital documents
• Knowledge portals
and also
• Division of scientific areas and disciplines used to organize scientific
activities
• Division of areas of practice activities used to work and labour
organization.

Tools of KOS (standardization)
• Standards for structures
• Content modularization (IMRaD, IDCRD, EASE)* and editorial composition
• Content visualization
• Content coding (XML/RDF)
• Abstract structures
• Notes and bibliography styles (Vancouver, Harvard, APA styles)
• Aggregation of digital objects

• Standards for rules
• Scientific publication styles (EASE)
• Ethics and good practices rules (GSP)
• Conflicts of interests removing (COI)
• Authorship settlement (Vancouver Protocol)
• Standards for procedures
• Deduction procedures (during research, represented by type of publication: theoretical,
experimental, review)
• Instruction and styles for authors (of publishers)
• Instructions and forms for reviewers
• Content evaluation rules
• Procedures of topic, co-authors and publisher/journal title choices

Conclusions
• PKO model (Publishing as KO) allows simultaneous
presentation of knowledge and publishing processes;
• It uses results of previous works in both directions;
• A comprehensive view on the processes allows the
terminology rearrangement;
• The model can be used to investigate and explain the
phenomena associated with scientific publishing (and
more broadly – with communicating), including its
transformation into an electronic form.
