1. PROFESSOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE OF
MADRID PRESENTS STUDY AND STATES THAT "IT IS AN
ANACHRONISM AND A CONTRADICTION THAT THE VETERINARY
PROFESSION SUPPORTS AND CONTRIBUTES TO BULLFIGHTING".
In Spain, veterinarians may specialize in the care, preparation and assessment of
the adequacy of bulls for the bullfighting show.
Miguel Ibañez Talegón, Professor of Ethology of the veterinary faculty of the
Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and
José Enrique Zaldivar Laguía, president of AVAT,
presented evidence of the enormous suffering of the bull during the bullfight.
Madrid, April 20, 2012. - The Association of Veterinarians Abolitionists of bullfighting
(AVAT), gave yesterday a class to veterinary students in the course of Taurología
(Bullfighting sciene) in the auditorium of the veterinary faculty of Caceres, Spain under
the title "Veterinary, Animal Welfare Dollhouse."
Miguel Ibañez Talegón, Professor of Ethology of the veterinary faculty of the
Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and José Enrique Zaldivar Laguía, veterinary and
president of AVAT, presented their work to a large audience. "The behavior of the
bull (during bullfights)" and "The suffering of the bull during the bullfight," were the
titles of their papers. This is the first time in its four years, that this association of
veterinarians is allowed to explain its position against shows in which the protagonist is
the bull, before Veterinary students.
Professor Ibáñez made special mention of the reactions that these animals have
when subjected to the intense aversive stimuli of bullfighting and Zaldivar
explained in detail the physical and metabolic damages and responses that occur
to the bulls during these fights. They both agreed on the terrible suffering endured
by these animals during the bullfight, belying the study presented in 2007 by other
veterinarians, in which bulls are attributed to bull a special capacity to support these
responses, minimizing their suffering.
Likewise, they stated that “It is an anachronism and a contradiction that the
veterinary profession supports and contributes to such events”, granting awards
to breeders of fighting bull or to celebrate their Christmas professional celebrations in
circuses with animals and made a call the veterinarian official bodies, to take into
account such considerations.
