  1. Anything in particular that you hope to learn today?
  2. If I asked you to find me the address of this building – How would you go about this? What clues do you see in the picture?
  3. 1. Searched Google images for tp office building – then click on the image of the picture to obtain the addressName of building is TP S.A. Tower is a highrise office tower in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. It is located at 14/16 TwardaStreet Use Google Earth [GE] to locate the building Using GE fly around to see the building behind this one Click on the building to see the name/addressSearch Lessons:  (1) Sometimes clues can be misleading (the Egyptian flag).  It's important to NOT get bogged down in dead ends, but be willing to change your strategy on the fly.  (2) Google's Search By Image, while a great tool, will have difficulty on a cityscape like this unless it happens to be a well-known view (such as the view of Paris from standard photo spots).  So you probably have to use Maps or, as in this example, Google Earth. (3) Google Earth is a valuable search tool when you're looking for objects that you can't identify otherwise.  In this case, we could align the photo with the 3D buildings and literally work backwards to identify the Warsaw Financial Tower.  (4) Sometimes clues are hidden in the details.   Above all, you just have to think like a detective.
  4. What clues can you find in the picture?
  5. AnswerSearch Google for “DQ-TRI” Wikipedia Page for Air FijiPicture of another plane in similar positionAt the Matei AirportLook up Matei Airport on Wikipedia for runway lengthAll about using clues to find information.

  7. New features on the Google homepageRegular front pageAfter you enter a search, more options will present themselvesClick on MORE Anytime – date restrictorAvailable Filters – Sites with images; related searches, dictionary, reading levelRelated Searches found at the bottom of the page. – Good way to think outside the box and get alternative terms for your searches Advanced Search screen link found at the bottom of the page.
  8. We are going to talk about some advanced search features today. Many of these are available through the “Advance Search Page” found at the bottom of the search results.
  9. Word Order Matters!Try every search three timesWord order matters – capitalization and punctuation often do not. eg. Blue sky; sky blueUse SynonymsConsider Filters such as time/location and others that we will discuss in just a few minutes.
  10. Word Choice MattersUtilize SynonymsUse basic words when creating a searchUse ~term for even more synonymsEg. Pig v. Pork Deer v. Venison Lamb v. MuttonReverse DictionariesANSWER: philtrum (sometimes spelt philtrim). The central depression under your nose is called the philtral dimple, and the ridges are called philtral columns. The word is Greek in origin and means magic potion. An old wives tale has it that the philtrum is a mark left by an angel’s finger at the moment of a baby’s birth. Another Example: San Francisco Bay – Ghost Town
  11. When search Google – searching their index of websites indexed through use of spiders.
  12. Personal results – can be turned off. - Be careful with this….can skew the results that you see. May want to sign out from time to time Web search history is searchableRelated Searches – Thinking outside the
  13. Site: returns web pages from a specific siteIntitle: returns webpages that contain the specified term in the metadata of the siteFiletype: returns pages/documents of a specified filetype such as pdf, excel, etc…Intext: is Google search syntax for searching only in the body text of documents and ignoring links, anchors, URLs, and titles.
  14. Question: How many people here actually use Bing?Bing and Google are actually very similar in searching and information contained.Main DifferenceBing believes the social info incredible importantWant to provide you with better relevant results Eg. Movie Videos – find tv shows; watch music and sports videosNews – local news; business news; entertainment newsBING alerts for topics
  15. Similar features to GoogleReturns webpages that contain the specified term in the metadata or in the HTML body. And v. Or AND - Finds webpages that contain all the terms or phrases in a query. By default, all searches are AND; that is, the search returns webpages that contain all the terms or phrases in the query. Case-sensitive; if all the query terms are uppercase, AND is not treated as an operator.OR – contains either term.
  16. Stats50 Billion tweets on Twitter in 201160 hrs of video uploaded on YouTube @ minute28 photos on Flickr each second.Bing thinks Social Impt because it gets you closer to what you are looking for faster.- Lets you know what’s going on now Social on Bing: Last night, millions of Americans tuned into President Obama’s State of the Union address – and Bing stood alone in giving people a rare opportunity to give real-time feedback and access live social data at Bing.com/Politics. Powered by Bing search technology and its unique social search experience, Bing’s State of the Union experience featured the breakthrough Bing Pulse – what turned out to be the largest live online poll in history. We promised that Bing would deliver a way for millions to participate in the State of the Union, and participate they did: The Bing Pulse received 12.9 million votes, allowing people to join the conversation by “voting” every five seconds on their reactions to the President’s speech. Live results of the Bing Pulse were shown last night on FOX News Channel and are summarized today in an infographic.
  17. Even though search and social results are blending, they are still kept separate because really, how can anyone decide which of those to rank more highly?December 2012 New Design for Social SidebarUntil recently, we only showed you what my friends Liked, and if they were from there. Now, we’re indexing much more data from Facebook. This includes relevant status updates, comments and photos. We still get Like and Share data, but because we now get the update and comment data, we amped up the amount of data that we index from Facebook by about a factor of 30, people will see, on average, about five times as many results as they actually would have seen before in the previous experience.http://www.stonetemple.com/graph-search-social-search-with-bings-stefan-weitzBing integrates with FB – if you allow the integration, postings from your friends will also appear. http://www.bing.com/community/site_blogs/b/search/archive/2012/12/11/the-bing-social-sidebar-gets-a-new-look.aspx
  18. Just Like Google – Bing allows you to sign in [register or use facebook login]Personal resultsLocation designationSearchable web historyRelated searches - bottom of the page great for seeing how others search and the terms used.
  19. A few months ago, we launched a new more modern experience for Bing Image Search. We cut out the white-space and clutter to make room for big, beautiful pictures from across the web. Since then, we have kept on working to make pictures shine on Bing. Starting today, we’re rolling out a brand new way to make it faster or more simple to explore imagery on Bing.  Now when you click an image, we don't waste your time loading a new page or force you to dig through a bunch of clutter. The new design loads quickly placing the image center stage. FiltersColor – Yellow – TealType – Photograph or Clip ArtPeople – Just faces or Face and shoulders
  20. Congress.gov has great filtering tools and useful data-mining too. Ixquick is sister site to Startpage – metasearch enginesDogPile – Meta search engine that indexes Google, Yahoo and YandexChaCha– rated the best answer SE; available on iphone and androidEg how many fish are in the sea?
  21. ChaCha – Question SEChaCha is primarily designed for text messaging, and also features tight integration with the social network Facebook, which includes a dedicated Facebook button below its keyboard which allows users to quickly share content on the service. http://searchengineland.com/chacha-defeats-google-bing-and-siri-in-answers-quality-study-149044 A recent study “ChaCha delivered the highest quality responses consistently across the largest group of categories and question types.”Search-engine company Startpagelaunched a service allowing users concerned about privacy to carry out Web searches and click on linked pages without being identified, tracked or recorded.Unlike mainstream search engines that gather commercially valuable information about user behavior, privately held Startpage (www.startpage.com) has focused on privacy since 2005.Startpage—also known as Ixquick outside the United States and Britain—had already offered private searching, but users would leave the company's protection when they clicked on a search result and entered a third-party website.Congress.gov and announced that it would eventually replace Thomas.gov, the 17-year-old website that represented one of the first significant forays online for Congress. The new website will educate the public looking for information on their mobile devices about the lawmaking process, but it falls short of the full promise of embracing the power of the Internet. (More on that later).Nice clean interface and You can use Congress.gov from virtually any device, but I'm mentioning the site today because it looks especially nice on an iPhone, a result of the website being designed to dynamically fit the size of the screen that you are using.  This change was intentional; improving mobile access was one of the goals of the new Congress.gov site.  For example, on a computer it looks like this.DogPile – meta search engine that searches Google, Yahoo, and Yandex
  22. Super hero super searcher90% of people do not use/know about the ctrl FHandout has a number of search strategies for locating information in addition to the strategies discussed here.
