Dear Friends of the USA National Pavilion:
The final months of 2009 witnessed a rapid succession of milestones for the USA National Pavilion project.
Following the October “topping off” ceremony for the building, at which U.S. Ambassador to China Jon
Huntsman presided, a visit to the Pavilion construction site by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham
Clinton in November helped further energize our effort.
In addition, tickets for the Shanghai Expo were made available for public purchase at the beginning of
December, and initial sales have already reached nearly 12 million within the short space of a month. The
Expo is clearly shaping up to be the blockbuster global event envisioned by its organizers.
2010 is here, and May 1 is fast approaching. We are grateful for your continued belief in the importance of
the USA National Pavilion. Your continued support will help the United States showcase our values and
innovations, as well as build stronger relationships with China and the rest of the world.
2. Secretary of State Clinton Visit Boosts USA National Pavilion
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton welcomes an enthusiastic crowd at the
USA National Pavilion construction site.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton emphasized the importance of U.S. participation in the
Shanghai World Expo during a November 16 visit to the USA National Pavilion construction site.
Energized by Secretary Clinton's visit and show of support, American executives are embarking on an
effort to raise awareness around the country of the role that the USA National Pavilion will play in next
year's World Expo and the benefits it will provide to companies seeking to increase their presence in
China’s dynamic and growing market.
The first-ever World Expo held in China will run from May through October 2010, and is expected to attract
70 million visitors - more than any Expo in 150 years of Expo or World Trade Fair history. To date, 192
countries and 45 international organizations have accepted invitations to attend the World Expo, the
largest number in Expo history.
At the construction site, Secretary Clinton praised American companies that have already committed to
participating in the Pavilion, noting that they understand "the importance of the Expo, the American role
here and what this USA National Pavilion here can do to strengthen cooperation and partnership between
the American people and the people of China."
"I know there are some in the audience who are still contemplating sponsorship or who may be in
negotiation with the U.S. Pavilion team," said Secretary Clinton. "Now is the time to join this effort."
Nick Winslow, President of the USA National Pavilion, said Secretary Clinton's visit has energized
efforts to attract more U.S. companies to support the Pavilion.
"Secretary Clinton is providing the spark plug of enthusiasm for this project. And we are working steadily
with American companies to show them how the Pavilion offers a terrific opportunity to strengthen their
presence in China and increase exports into a massive and growing market," said Winslow.
3. "As Secretary Clinton's visit underscores, the Pavilion offers a tremendous opportunity for American
companies in one of the world's fastest growing markets," said Winslow. "As China prepares to host the
largest World Expo in history, the Pavilion will allow U.S. organizations to present America's story to 70
million Chinese visitors and top Chinese government officials over a period of six months and to
demonstrate our commitment to strengthening U.S.-China relations and engagement in Asia."
American, Chinese Leaders Celebrate “Topping Off” of USA Pavilion
U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman wished the USA National Pavilion success during his
first visit to Shanghai since being sworn in as Ambassador.
In October, U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, and the Deputy Secretary General of
Shanghai Municipal Government and Director General of the Shanghai World Expo Coordination
Bureau Hong Hao, joined hands and drew Chinese calligraphy together on a vertical beam of the steel
structure of the USA National Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo while wishing the Pavilion and the
Expo success.
The beam was also signed by USA National Pavilion Co-Founder Ellen Eliasoph and Board Chairman
Kenneth Jarrett, symbolizing the private-sector and governmental cooperation that is making the USA
Pavilion possible. The "topping-off" ceremony was held to mark the completion of the superstructure of the
USA National Pavilion, which broke ground on July 17, 2009. It was attended by officials from the U.S.
Embassy in Beijing, the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai, and the Bureau of World Expo Coordination.
This was Jon Huntsman's first visit to Shanghai after he was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to China on
August 11, 2009.
At over 60,000 square feet (6,000 square meters), the USA National Pavilion will be one of the largest
national pavilions at the Expo. The U.S. presence at the Expo will be the fruits of a unique collaboration
between the U.S. Department of State and Pavilion sponsors that will include leading America-based
companies and organizations. The Pavilion's construction is expected to be completed by the end of the
year.
4. The USA National Pavilion Store is the Perfect Place to Visit as You Begin the New Year
The USA 2010 Stadium Blanket is on of the many gift ideas you can find at the USA Pavilion Store.
Now that the Shanghai Expo 2010 is only a few months away, consider visiting the USA Pavilion Store at
www.usapavilion2010store.com. The USA National Pavilion Committee announced the launch of its online
store for clothing, accessories and gifts bearing the USA National Pavilion logo in September of 2009. The
store offers dozens of items that can be shipped anyplace around the world.
The USA National Pavilion is the official representative of the United States at the Shanghai World Expo
2010. It is managed by Shanghai Expo 2010, Inc., a non-profit tax-exempt entity responsible for carrying
out the fund-raising, design, construction, and operation of the USA National Pavilion project on behalf of
the government of the United States of America.
Nearly 12 Million Tickets Already Sold for the Shanghai World Expo 2010
Shanghai has achieved the goal of tickets sales in 2009 ahead of schedule, according to the Shanghai
World Expo Coordination Bureau. A total of 11.8 million tickets for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo have
been sold so far.
The Expo organizers predicted that they will successfully reach the sales target of 70 million tickets. And
the international gala in Shanghai is expected to become the most-visited World Expo.
According to Xinhua, tickets for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo went on sale in the United States on
December 1, with some travel packages offering trips to other Chinese destinations as well as attendance
at the fair itself. In the United States, people can buy the tickets at more than 1,600 outlets of the
Peregrine Travel Group, one of 14 designated ticket agencies. Individuals can also buy tickets at
www.worldexpochina.net and pay online by credit card.
The expo organizers said the USA National Pavilion is well on track of its construction and will showcase
sustainability, teamwork, health, and the spirit of meeting challenges. Three American cities - San
Francisco, Philadelphia and Chicago - have planned to demonstrate their blueprints for future metropolis in
the Urban Best Practices Area of the Pavilion.
