Welcome and about the Symposium from proceedings Chair and
Executive Chairman of the Sustain Group, Matthew Tukaki:
I am really pleased that Sustain Group is able to develop a symposium that begins to look past the
present and towards the Post 2015 Agenda. We have all struggled with the development challenge
over many years with different actors and sectors playing various roles. While some great challenges
have been met, we still have a number to confront. With the prospect of a growing population we need
to stay vigilant around those challenges that sometimes can appear to be tough.
That is why we have developed a strong agenda seeking to pull all of those various actors and sectors
together. We have also recognised that some strong challenges still confront Africa, Asia and Small
Island Developing States - which is why, as part of the Symposium we have dedicated roundtables on
these geographies. In addition, we recognise that there are already a number of solutions that are out
there. This is why we want to ensure that you have the chance to put your research forward. We want
to showcase what we know already that can best inform us as we move forward to the Post 2015 era.
Ahead of Australia hosting the G20 we wanted to also make sure that we were able to address the key
challenges with opportunity and use the basis of the Symposium to feed outcomes and solutions
directly to world leaders as they gather in Brisbane that same week.
The Academic community play an integral role and we look forward to receiving your paper
submissions.

1. Key areas of interest
The International Symposium has developed a robust agenda and schedule whereby the academic
and business community will be given an opportunity to provide detailed insights into research
undertakings or solutions that have been implemented in a developing country context. The theme of
the Symposium is to move from challenge to opportunity. The first call for papers is being issued from
the 1
st
of October 2013 with a second call being made from the 1
st
of March – 1
st
of May 2014. Each
paper submission should show how the topic directly corresponds to a major theme area or specific
geographic area. Sectors for submission:
≥ Academia: thematic area focussed
≥ Government: program or policy related
≥ Business: solution or case study connected to a specific development challenge
≥ Civil Society: example of a partnerships in a developing country connected to a development
challenge
Major theme areas:
There are four core themes for the Symposium with each broken down into different thematic areas
ranging from women’s empowerment and private sector development finance to the development of
partnerships and the transformation of economies. Other thematic areas such as food, water and
energy security will loom large as will the development of capacity and capability building alongside
the strengthening of institutions.
1. Leave No One Behind: In this theme we explore the transformative shift the Sustainable
Development Goals Post 2015 Agenda are seeking to, “leave no one behind.” We should move
from reducing to ending extreme poverty, in all its forms. We should ensure that no person –
regardless of ethnicity, gender, geography, disability, race or other status – is denied basic
economic opportunities and human rights.
2. Forging Partnerships: In this theme we explore the transformative shift the Sustainable
Development Goals Post 2015 Agenda are seeking in, “forging a new global partnership.” A new
spirit of solidarity, cooperation, and mutual accountability must underpin the post-2015 agenda.
This new partnership should be based on a common understanding of our shared humanity,
based on mutual respect and mutual benefit. It should be centred around people, including those
affected by poverty and exclusion, women, youth, the aged, disabled persons, and indigenous
peoples. It should include civil society organizations, multilateral institutions, local and national
governments, the scientific and academic community, businesses, and private philanthropy.
3. Transforming Economies: In this theme we explore the transformative shift the Sustainable
Development Goals Post 2015 Agenda are seeking to, “Transform economies for jobs and
inclusive growth.” A profound economic transformation can end extreme poverty and improve
livelihoods, by harnessing innovation, technology, and the potential of business. More diversified
economies, with equal opportunities for all, can drive social inclusion, especially for young people,
and foster sustainable consumption and production patterns.
4. Social Impact and Development: In this theme we explore the need to measure our social
impact as the key determinant of sustainable development. “At the end of the day, whatever the
motivating factors involved, the reality is that your social investments should be guided by one
fundamental outcome – has it changed the life of an individual, the lives of a group of
stakeholders, a whole community or a nation state?”

2. Submission criteria:
The abstract should be 300-500 words in length. Please do not include any details that might identify
you or your institution. All camera-ready abstracts should be sent to sdgp2015@sustaingroup.net in
Microsoft Word format. Please follow the guidelines in order to facilitate the editors to produce the
proceedings on time. The incorrect formats may result in your paper / abstract being returned to you.
The aim and/or objectives of the study should be stated here.
≥ Methods: Outline the methods used in your study here:
≥ Results: Describe the results here and/or the finding/contents of the research:
≥ Conclusions: Present your conclusions here: (If you use any references, these should be
listed in Vancouver style and numbered in the order in which they appear in the text. In the
text, enclose reference numbers in square brackets, e.g. [1], [2], [3], … etc. That means that
references should not be listed in alphabetical order. Journal articles as depicted in the
example below should conform to the standard Vancouver style of punctuation, and
abbreviations.)
≥ Finally, please ensure that you keep within the word limits. Papers / Abstracts should be
between 300 and 500 words, excluding references.
3. Timelines for acceptance:

2013 you will be notified of the outcome in February 2014.
2. 2014: For those who submit papers between the 1

of March and the 1
st
of May 2014 you will be
notified of the outcome in July of 2014.
4. Terms and conditions:
All paper submissions are subject to acceptance by the Symposium Board. If a paper is accepted for
inclusion into the Symposium proceedings costs related to attendance will be at the expense of the
presenter or presenting organisation. Bursaries may apply but only in circumstances whereby the
presenter comes from an institution in a developing country where no financial support is available.
Costs that would generally be covered by the presenter or presenting organisation would include
travel, accommodation and cost of registration.
