2. The Great Fire of London began on the night of September 2, 1666 year. It consumed 13500
houses, 87 parish churches. The fire began in Thomas Farynor`s bakery, at 1 o`clock in the morning.
It spread rapidly west across the city of London. The Great Fire of London, arguably left a far greater
mark on the city when compared of the plague.
3. The Fire destroyed 80 % of the city. Tuesday, 4 September, was the day of the greatest
destruction. The Fire destroyed St. Paul`s Cathedral.
4. Work on the present Cathedral commenced in 1675, and was completed on October 20, 1708, the76th
birthday of it`s architect, Sir Christopher Wren.
5. Despite numerous radical proposals, London was reconstructed on essentially the same street plan used
before the fire. Charles 2 appointed six Commissioners to redesign the city. The plan provided for wider
streets and buildings of brick, rather than timber. By 1671, 9000 houses and public buildings had been
completed.
6. The King also had Wren design a monument to the Great Fire, which stands still today at the site of
the bakery which started it all, on a street now named Monument street.
