1. How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary
texts?
2. Our Genre
Genre was a very important aspect to bare in mind
throughout creating both our music video and other products.
The genre affects many things such as who your target
audience should be, their age, gender etc and also your
artist’s overall star image.
When researching Indie pop and pop culture, we noticed
there were lots of flowers and lots of the themes seemed to
be based around peace and care-free living. Here are
examples of how we incorporated this information into our
pieces.
3. Costume
As you can see below, throughout our music video our artist tends to wear lots of loose, oversized outfits.
In my opinion this emphasises the whole ‘care-free’ idea of most indie/pop artists as it shows she is not
too bothered about what people might think of her dress sense, as long as she is comfortable. At the
same time however, her fashion sense is still current and shows she has style.
Also, advancing on the whole idea of both the indie and pop culture being very bright and almost
‘summery’, we ensured that our artist wore bright colours and flowery patterns throughout the
performance.
Both of the prints of these tops have a very tropical vibe with flowers and greenery on them. The tropics
are always connected with holidays and a lovely peaceful beach so again fits perfectly for the ‘care-free’
star image we were trying to portray. We even had the top on the left hand side change colours as the
greenscreen did so the artist always looked colour coordinated.
4. Continuing the use of costume to portray our
genre and star image, during this shoot I
wore a flower head garment and a lose
fitting flowery cardigan to really maximise
the’ indie pop’ look. This links in well with
the costumes I wore during our music video
and the flower and tropical theme is
continued. These images were then used on
both the website and also my digipack to
ensure the combination of our main product
and ancillary texts was effective.

5. Website Background
Afeba and I even made
sure to chose a suitable
background that also
reflected all of the
previous conventions
mentioned. The blue
skies and palm trees
again reflecting and
‘care-free life’.
Another thing that drew our attention to this
particular background was the face that it
actually looked very similar to the top Nyla
wore throughout the music video and
therefore I believe, works very well. This also
enabled us to maintain our star image
throughout different media texts.
6. Fonts and Colours
Another aspect that was kept consistent throughout all our products made
was the style and colour of all the text used. We chose pink as it was one of
the main green screen colours used in the music video and is also a girly
colour to suit our artist and her star image. Keeping this consistent also makes
it more recognisable as Nyla’s image as it is clear this is her style.
7. Target Audience
I personally believe our target audience are mainly females from about the age of
16-25 of a working class. I have come to this decision as I believe women that fit
those particular categories will be able to relate to the artist and her music more
than say a younger or older female or even a male.
Our target audience explains why there are not many ‘male gaze’ shots or much
voyeurism in general throughout our music video. Voyeurism is very much expected
in pop videos however our production challenges this stereotype.
However, there is one instance where the female gaze is touched upon. This occurs
in the scene where the male character acting as Nyla’s boyfriend in the performance
lowers his jeans. A medium close up is used to accentuate his muscular legs which is
likely to appeal to our chosen target audience.
8. Access
Seeing as our target audience’s age range is from mid-teens to mid-twenties, we
can assume that they will all be very computer literate and also are very likely to
own smart phones. Due to this we made sure the website was definitely available
to be viewed on both a computer and a mobile device in order to fulfil our target
audience’s needs.
