On the evening of 20 March 1815, Napoleon enters Paris and takes
possession of the Tuileries Palace, within 24 hours of it being
abandoned by the fleeing Bourbon King Louis XVIII. During the
three weeks that Napoleon has been on the road since leaving his
exile on Elba, he has been greeted by cheering crowds and joined
by soldiers defecting from the royal troops. But news has not yet
reached Paris that the Coalition of European powers has already
met and decided to overthrow the self-proclaimed Emperor. Just
three months later comes the final confrontation at Waterloo,
ending in the defeat of the French and the second abdication of
Napoleon. The return of the Eagle has lasted just a Hundred Days.
While tracing the events of those days, the tour will explore more
widely the whole phenomenon of Napoleon: his personality, his
leadership, his relationship with family and huge dynastic
ambitions, his careful cultivation of image, and finally his
controversial place in the history of France and beyond. It will also
look at those around him, in particular his divorced Empress,
Josephine, whose spirit still floats over the beautiful home at
Malmaison.
As well as visiting some of the most stunning palaces of France with
the best local guides, the tour includes evening lectures by
distinguished guest speakers and a special “soirée Napoléon”.

The Visits:
Former royal residence, now one of the most visited – and
loved – museums in the world. Napoleon had grand designs
for rebuilding the palace and its surroundings. He created his
own Musée Napoléon here in 1802 with the spoils of his
military campaigns. Though the collection was dispersed in
1815, the current museum contains several stunning artefacts
relating to the Emperor.
This palace, 60 kilometers south-east of Paris, was Napoleon’s
favorite official residence. Famously this was where he
abdicated in April 1814 and left for exile on Elba (“les adieux
de Fontainebleau”), only to return just eleven months later on
his way back to Paris at the beginning of the Hundred Days.
Since 1986 it has been home to the Museum of Napoleon I.
Just outside Paris, this château was initially Napoleon and
Josephine’s country retreat. Josephine was allowed to live
here after the divorce in 1809 and the house – now
magnificently restored – reflects her tastes and her
personality. One arresting exhibit is the family tree showing
how most of the current ruling royal families of Europe
descend from her children from her first marriage.
Napoleon introduced a new honors system in 1802 with the
Legion of Honor as the highest decoration. The Museum
opened in 1925 and houses a fascinating exhibition about the
honors systems throughout France’s possessions across
Europe during the First Empire. (Interesting fact: San Francisco
has a scaled down but otherwise identical copy of the
building!)
A military hospital, the Hôtel des Invalides became Napoleon’s
last resting place after his body was brought back from Saint
Helena in great pomp in 1840 – nearly 20 years after his death
– in an attempt to bolster then King Louis-Philippe’s waning
popularity. As well as containing the magnificent tomb, which
itself took 20 years to complete, the Hôtel des Invalides now
houses the National Army Museum.
“(The Palace of) Compiègne speaks of Napoleon as Versailles
does of Louis XIV“ (Auguste Luchet). Substantially restored by
Napoleon, a superb example of First Empire style, although
subsequently much altered by his nephew who, as Napoleon
III, was to make it his favored residence in the 1850s.
The famous battlefield lies just 20 minutes from Brussels.
Here, in June 1815, France fought six Coalition powers,
including Britain, Prussia and the Netherlands (who put up the
lion monument five years later). According to Wellington, the
battle was a "a damned near-run thing”. A new visitor center
opens in 2015 to celebrate the 200th anniversary.
The History Collection exists for lovers of history and travel
who take pleasure in discovery and learning and choose to
share their passion with a small group of likeminded amateurs
in a relaxed but stimulating environment. Each tour consists
of locally guided tours of historic sites alongside informative
and entertaining talks by expert speakers representing diverse
viewpoints. The tours are accompanied by a tour manager
who is a historian and provides the overall narrative thread.
The Anniversary Series is a very small number of exclusive
one-off tours commemorating the anniversary of significant
historical events. This tour will be accompanied by Michael
Ashworth, a bilingual (French-English) graduate of Cambridge
and post-graduate of Paris universities.
VATEA is a French-based registered travel operator with
over 15 years’ experience of organizing customized trips

The History Collection by VATEA-VTA
General Conditions of Sale
Our general conditions of sale apply on all tours in THE HISTORY COLLECTION by VATEA-VTA. Taking part in one of these
tours implies your agreement to these conditions. Special conditions for a particular tour can complete or modify the terms
of the general conditions. In this case, the special conditions overrule the general conditions.
At the time of announcing our tours, the practical and economic conditions prevailing at the time the tour is actually run
cannot be known and the announced conditions and prices cannot be considered definitive. The latest conditions and
prices can be obtained by calling +33 (0)1 55 60 77 18.
Registration
Part or complete payment of the price of the tour according to the terms of your invoice is deemed as acceptance of the
program and the activities of the tour you are going to take part in as well as of our special and general conditions. Travelers
registering by telephone can send us the signed reservation summary that is addressed to them by mail; in the event that no
such signed document is received by VATEA-VTA, their tacit consent is presumed.
Physical aptitude and dietary requirements
THE HISTORY COLLECTION by VATEA-VTA tours are accessible to all and do not demand any physical aptitude in particular,
unless specified in our documents of sale and information. However since they take place in a group and most of the time
take the form of an itinerant tour including pedestrian visit of sites and monuments, they are addressed to people in good
physical conditions that are able to walk without difficulty. People with a handicap are welcome if they are assisted by
someone that can take care of them throughout the tour. Responsibility to help out for their travel assistance or daily
routines cannot be assumed by the Tour Manager or other travelers.
We will endeavor to satisfy any particular dietary requirements that are notified to us in advance of the tour dates. However,
despite our best efforts, we are unable to guarantee that all such requirements will be met in all instances.
Formalities
Travelers must be in possession of the documents required by the police, customs or health authorities of the countries
where the travel takes place. Travelers need to consult the consular authorities of the destination country to know the
particular requirements of that country specific to their nationality. VATEA-VTA cannot be held responsible nor liable for
cancellation fees in case of delays in receiving documents required by VATEA-VTA from the traveler and delays or refusals in
the issuing of documents by the competent authorities, nor from any defects or irregularities in the travel documents both on
departure and during the tour.
Itinerary and tour program
Our tours take place in principle according to the details provided in the brochure, but certain circumstances may lead us to
make changes to the itinerary without advance warning. Certain constraints, independent of our will (changes in transport
schedules, climatic conditions, unscheduled closings, public holidays…) can make us change the order of the visits, the exact
route taken, and/or shorten, reschedule or cancel visits.
Hotels
Hotels are given on an indicative basis. For each of them we will indicate their category according to the local norms. These
hotels can be replaced by establishments of the same category. In the event of a change of category, if it is higher than the
one specified, the difference will be at our charge. If the category is lower, you will be reimbursed the difference on your
return, on the basis of the prices charged by our providers.
Times of departure and return
The time and place of the meeting place for departure will be communicated when the booking is made. If the traveler
arrives late, VATEA-VT will not be held responsible. It will be the responsibility of the traveler to make arrangements to join
the group at their current location.
Tour Manager and guest speakers
In case of unavailability, the Tour Manager and/or guest speakers quoted in our brochures can be replaced by a Tour
Manager and/or guest speaker deemed by VATEA-VTA to be equivalent. These changes cannot constitute grounds for
cancellation.
IM 092110047 - RC voyage Allianz n° 864712184
30/04/2015
Size of the groups
Unless notified otherwise, our groups are limited to 24 participants. If exceptionally this number is exceeded, compensation,
calculated by reference to the cost of the Travel Manager, speakers and and local transport, will be given to travelers at the
time of departure.
Cancellation of the tour by VATEA-VTA
All our tours require a a minimum of 16 participants to take place. A tour may be cancelled due to this minimum not being
reached at the latest 60 days before the beginning of the tour. In this case the traveler may either transfer the booking to a
later tour, or be reimbursed the whole cost of the tour. In no event can VATEA-VTA bear the cost of any related expenses
already incurred or committed to by the traveler (hotel, transport…)
In case of force majeure
In case of political risks, health or natural catastrophes or in the limitation or prohibition of access to certain visiting places
imposed by the authorities of the country, or strikes, we may be obliged to change a program or not be able to ensure the

unable to continue the tour normally will be at the traveler’s expense.
Interruption of the tour at the traveler’s initiative will not give rise to any reimbursements.
The participant that does not show up at departure or who, for whatever motive, does not take up any services provided in

  • 3. IM 092110047 - RC voyage Allianz n° 864712184 30/04/2015 On the evening of 20 March 1815, Napoleon enters Paris and takes possession of the Tuileries Palace, within 24 hours of it being abandoned by the fleeing Bourbon King Louis XVIII. During the three weeks that Napoleon has been on the road since leaving his exile on Elba, he has been greeted by cheering crowds and joined by soldiers defecting from the royal troops. But news has not yet reached Paris that the Coalition of European powers has already met and decided to overthrow the self-proclaimed Emperor. Just three months later comes the final confrontation at Waterloo, ending in the defeat of the French and the second abdication of Napoleon. The return of the Eagle has lasted just a Hundred Days. While tracing the events of those days, the tour will explore more widely the whole phenomenon of Napoleon: his personality, his leadership, his relationship with family and huge dynastic ambitions, his careful cultivation of image, and finally his controversial place in the history of France and beyond. It will also look at those around him, in particular his divorced Empress, Josephine, whose spirit still floats over the beautiful home at Malmaison. As well as visiting some of the most stunning palaces of France with the best local guides, the tour includes evening lectures by distinguished guest speakers and a special “soirée Napoléon”. Day 1 – Wed 30 September 2015 Travel to Paris Visit Louvre Museum and sites around Dinner Introductory talk Night in Paris Day 2 – Thu 1 October 2015 Visit Palace of Fontainebleau Lunch Afternoon free in Paris. Dinner Guest speaker Night in Paris Day 3 – Fri 2 October 2015 Visit Château of Malmaison Lunch Visit Museum of the Legion of Honor Dinner Night in Paris Day 4 – Sat 3 October 2015 Return of the Ashes walking tour in Paris Lunch Visit Napoleon’s Tomb in the Hôtel des Invalides Soirée Napoléon including dinner Night in Paris Day 5 – Sun 4 October 2015 Visit Palace of Compiègne Lunch Afternoon free in Brussels Dinner Guest speaker Night in Brussels Day 6 – Mon 5 October 2015 Visit Waterloo Battlefield Lunch Travel home from Brussels or Paris Introduction to the Voyage . . . Program:* • Subject to change for reasons beyond our control. In this event, we will endeavor to replace the activity with one of equivalent quality and relevance.
  • 4. IM 092110047 - RC voyage Allianz n° 864712184 30/04/2015 The Visits: Former royal residence, now one of the most visited – and loved – museums in the world. Napoleon had grand designs for rebuilding the palace and its surroundings. He created his own Musée Napoléon here in 1802 with the spoils of his military campaigns. Though the collection was dispersed in 1815, the current museum contains several stunning artefacts relating to the Emperor. This palace, 60 kilometers south-east of Paris, was Napoleon’s favorite official residence. Famously this was where he abdicated in April 1814 and left for exile on Elba (“les adieux de Fontainebleau”), only to return just eleven months later on his way back to Paris at the beginning of the Hundred Days. Since 1986 it has been home to the Museum of Napoleon I. Just outside Paris, this château was initially Napoleon and Josephine’s country retreat. Josephine was allowed to live here after the divorce in 1809 and the house – now magnificently restored – reflects her tastes and her personality. One arresting exhibit is the family tree showing how most of the current ruling royal families of Europe descend from her children from her first marriage. Napoleon introduced a new honors system in 1802 with the Legion of Honor as the highest decoration. The Museum opened in 1925 and houses a fascinating exhibition about the honors systems throughout France’s possessions across Europe during the First Empire. (Interesting fact: San Francisco has a scaled down but otherwise identical copy of the building!) A military hospital, the Hôtel des Invalides became Napoleon’s last resting place after his body was brought back from Saint Helena in great pomp in 1840 – nearly 20 years after his death – in an attempt to bolster then King Louis-Philippe’s waning popularity. As well as containing the magnificent tomb, which itself took 20 years to complete, the Hôtel des Invalides now houses the National Army Museum. “(The Palace of) Compiègne speaks of Napoleon as Versailles does of Louis XIV“ (Auguste Luchet). Substantially restored by Napoleon, a superb example of First Empire style, although subsequently much altered by his nephew who, as Napoleon III, was to make it his favored residence in the 1850s. The famous battlefield lies just 20 minutes from Brussels. Here, in June 1815, France fought six Coalition powers, including Britain, Prussia and the Netherlands (who put up the lion monument five years later). According to Wellington, the battle was a "a damned near-run thing”. A new visitor center opens in 2015 to celebrate the 200th anniversary. The History Collection exists for lovers of history and travel who take pleasure in discovery and learning and choose to share their passion with a small group of likeminded amateurs in a relaxed but stimulating environment. Each tour consists of locally guided tours of historic sites alongside informative and entertaining talks by expert speakers representing diverse viewpoints. The tours are accompanied by a tour manager who is a historian and provides the overall narrative thread. The Anniversary Series is a very small number of exclusive one-off tours commemorating the anniversary of significant historical events. This tour will be accompanied by Michael Ashworth, a bilingual (French-English) graduate of Cambridge and post-graduate of Paris universities. VATEA is a French-based registered travel operator with over 15 years’ experience of organizing customized trips for groups of individuals and corporate clients.
