Scope of work: exhibit design, illustration.
A bolder, more vibrant “Rockstar” theme was
devised as the daytime showcase transitioned
into an evening cocktail event. Music indus-
try icons were rendered in sillouhette and ap-
plied to partition panels, which were used to
quickly and seamlessly swap out a selection
of panels used for the daytime setting.

Client: Silicon Valley Bank
Scope of work: naming, branding identity,
environmental graphics.
With its drive to reach the blossoming tech
entrepreneurial market in San Francisco, as
well as other major urban areas across the
US, Silicon Valley Bank sought to expand its
service offerings through the provision of
seed funding and other startup support tools
for these emerging innovators.
Occupying two floors in the historic Golden
Gate Theatre in the Mid-Market district of the
city, this fledgeling new identity would have
pride of place and be adaptive to local ver-
nacular, while being celebratory of craft and
individual expression.

6. SAN JOSE MUSEUM OF ART
Client: San Jose Museum of Art
Scope of work: interior and exterior environ-
mental graphics.
The San Jose Museum of Art consists of an
historic Richardsonian Romanesque struc-
ture coupled with a contemporary annex
designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill. The
goal of this system was to unify the two wings,
each of which faced perpendicular streets,
and reinforce the modern theme of the mu-
seum. This was largely achieved through use
of material and the mimicking of architec-
tural themes. Interior signs were constructed
of fixed and removable aluminum panels with
changeable graphic elements printed onto
removable vinyl film. Exterior signs consist of
water-cut steel, screen-printed canvas ban-
ners, and applied vinyls.

8. L’ARGENTO
Concept
Scope of work: logotype, packaging.
This was a concept piece for a fictitious wine
label. The name l’argento, “silver” in Italian,
set the tone for this moderne-inspired de-
sign. The use of distinct color variation for
each label allows for quick distinction of the
different varietals. The two-sided label incor-
porates a foil stamp, die-cut and 2-color off-
set printing processes.
9. MERRIEWOOD MERCANTILE
Client: Merriewood Mercantile
Scope of work: branding identity, logotype,
hand lettering, packaging, environmental
graphics.
The branding system for the Merriewood
family of local, sustainable, organic and
handmade goods is inspired by the Arts and
Crafts movement as an antidote to the often
corporate flavor of commercial and luxury
brand marketing. The system includes a cus-
tom typeface to be used across packaging,
collateral, signage, advertising and electronic
media. Production values are to reflect the
homespun values of the founders and com-
munity they support, focusing on the use of
letterpress, silkscreen, hand painting, carving
and handmade papers.

Scope of work: branding identity, illustration
Scientists working on the DinoChicken Proj-
ect – the latest study headed by paleontolo-
gist Dr. Jack Horner involving the genetic link
between dinosaurs and modern birds – re-
quired a distinct identity, as well as an array
of imagery which could be used to identify
the project for journal publication. The yin
and yang symbol served as inspiration for
the identity work, as it signifies the sharing
of DNA of both species – there’s a little of
the bird in the dinosaur, and a little of the di-
nosaur in the bird. The new identity would
strike its own chord while working in harmo-
ny with existing MOTR brand standards.

bryo tail represent the first in a series pub-
lished in the journal EvoDevo.
