Theoretical Basis
for the FIM
Impairment: Abnormalities of structure or
function. Disturbances at organ level
Disability: Abnormality at person level.
Restrictions of compound integrated activities‐‐
tasks, skills and behaviors.
Handicap: Prevents the individual from fulfilling
a role that is normal for that individual. A
Handicap reflects the cultural, social or economic
consequences of impairment or disability.
Handicap is shaped by values and attitudes.
