UK Access Management News - Shibboleth 1.3 End of Life Date
JISC Collections strongly recommend that all colleges currently running Shibboleth 1.3 should
upgrade to the current version of Shibboleth (2.x IdP) well in advance of the End Of Life (EOL) date of
30 June 2010.
This will protect against the possibility of a forced but unplanned migration from 1.3 should a security
issue or incompatibility be discovered after the EOL date has been reached.
The Shibboleth 2 SP software is now fully supported by the UK federation helpdesk. This support
includes on-line documentation to help with configuring and registering Shibboleth 2 entities, as well
as training courses for this software available through JANET(UK).

129 institutions are currently benefitting from free access to the Institute of Physics Journal
Archive 1874-1998 which was purchased in 2005 as part of the UK National Academic
Archive.

Shibboleth Forum in Wolverhampton – March 2010
Mark Williams of the UK Access management support team will be giving a presentation at a
forum organised by RSC West Midlands which provides an opportunity for IT staff and others
to share experiences and give advice on how to plan for and implement Federated Access
Management using Shibboleth.

Google Digitised Books – Your Write to Reply
The US Google Book Settlement through which approximately seven million books have been
digitised by Google through partnerships with libraries, publishers and authors, has captured the
attention and imagination of a wide range of people in education.
As a result of this, JISC has created a space to keep the higher and further education communities
abreast of news and events as they happen. It is also offering the opportunity to comment on issues
which encroach on surrounding debates such as the use and re-use of digital content and Intellectual
Property Rights.

New agreements for Grove Art Online and Grove Music Online
New agreements for Grove Art Online and Grove Music Online are now available from JISC
Collections, and an additional discount is available to institutions taking out a subscription to both
resources. The agreements will end on 31 May 2011 and will be replaced by a single agreement
covering all databases from Oxford University Press from 1 June 2011.

3. BBC and The British Museum Join Forces on a History of the World
The new project aims to show how objects and their related stories reveal a history of the people and
places of the world. It consists of a digital museum of world history, with people across the UK
uploading images of their contributions, Much of the BBC’s broadcast content will focus on the
objects on the website and they are keen to involve as many people and organisations as possible.
Visit the website to see objects already chosen by museums in Northern Ireland and across the UK, or
to create your BBC log-in so you can upload your own objects to the database. The site is at:

BBC Headroom Site – A Valuable Teaching Source on Mental Health Issues
The new BBC Headroom campaign which has developed a website full of resources to encourage
people to look after their mental health and wellbeing. As well as meeting this primary focus the site
will be of use to those studying and teaching about health and wellbeing matters.

How to Set Up a USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 7
If you have a netbook and would like to upgrade it to Windows 7, you may be wondering how to do it
without an external DVD Drive. The link below shows you how to install Windows 7 from a USB flash
drive.
Installing Windows 7 from a flash drive is essentially the same as installing it from a DVD. Most of the
work is in setting up your flash drive so it becomes a bootable device with the Operating System on it.
You can take a look at a couple of utilities that will allow you to easily create a bootable USB drive
and copy Windows 7 to it.
Note: You’ll need a minimum of a 4GB flash drive to dedicate to the installation files.
