- NEW MISSION:To improve health and well-being in partnership with our members, patients and the community.Our commitment statement:HealthPartners is committed to caring for the places where we live and work so we can provide a healthier and cleaner community for our employees, members, patients and future generations.To us sustainability isn’t just about reducing waste or finding efficiencies that save us money – it’s about improving health. We know that health isn’t just about what happens in the doctor’s office. In fact, we know that’s just 20 percent of a person’s health outcomes. If we want to impact the health of our members, patients and community, we need to focus on more than just their interactions with us in a care or insurance setting – and one of those things is the environment that we all live in. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the resources available to us for transportation, healthy eating, recycling, etc.
- We have efforts happening organization-wide at all locations to make sure that we meet aggressive goals when it comes to sustainability. A few examples are up here on the screen. Medication take-back helps our patients, members and community dispose of medication the right way. In 2102, more than 1,222 took advantage of free disposal at one of our 12 collection sites. This also keeps medication from polluting our environment when it is flushed or otherwise put in the water stream.Energy use is a big focus, especially for our hospitals. We are working on a comprehensive energy management plan for our entire organization, which could include things like installing more efficient lights or motors. (Regions Hospital uses half the energy of a typical hospital, and has been recognized by Xcel Energy and has received $250,000 since 2011 in energy efficiency rebates. In the last year, Hudson Hospital reduced energy use by 5 percent.)When it comes to waste – everyone can make a big difference by participating in our recycling programs (and organics program if your location has it). We have mixed recycling at most locations across the organization– and we just deployed new decals that make recycling even easier. (Insert details about where recycling is located at your building/location.)Because of our efforts we’re starting to gain recognition externally, in the community. For example, Hudson, Regions and Westfields Hospitals won a total of four Environmental Excellence Awards from Practice Greenhealth.
- From my own experiences starting a program, here is what I can tell you.Find your advocates – they are there. Don’t assume that you have to start from scratch.Figure out how you will collect information. That’s how you measure and SHOW CASE success.You can’t overcommunicate. We’ve seen nothing but interest from our employees in how to be engaged in our sustainability programs.
