King Shahriyar
For three years he killed a woman every day. 1,950 women
Shahrazad I want to save all of the women in the kingdom!
She entered his chamber (recámara) and offered to tell him a story. The king lay awake and listened to the story with amazement and when Shahrazad finished, he demanded another story. Clever (astuta) Shahrazad said no, dawn was breaking (amanecía) and they had run out (acabó) of time. But she promised a second story, even more amazing (asombroso) than the first.
And so the king kept Shahrazad alive (viva), eagerly anticipating each new story. One thousand and one nights later, the king had not only been entertained but wisely educated in morality and kindness (bondad) by Shahrazad who became his queen. By telling stories, she not only saved her own life, but also the lives of others.
Way to go, Shahrazad!

College Life: listening comprehension Let’s listen to this dialogue between two friends. We will listen 2-3 times.
Retelling what someone said I will ask a student a question The student will respond I will ask another student what the first student said The second student will retell what the first student said Example: Professor Julie: What is your favorite sport? Mary: My favorite sport is hockey. Professor Julie to Joshua: What did ____ say her favorite sport was? Joshua: She said her favorite sport was hockey.
Jealous Guy: John Lennon What does it mean to be jealous? Who gets jealous? Why? Have you ever been jealous? Of whom? We will listen to the song “Jealous Guy”. The first time, just listen. Then we will do the activities on the lyrics handout.
Write a conversation and tell us what these people said. Also answer: who, what, when, where, how, why…
Exercise 1: Put the following paragraph in the reported speech into conversational form using direct speech. Peter introduced me to Jack who said he was pleased to meet me. I replied that it was my pleasure, and that I hoped Jack was enjoying his stay in Seattle. He said he thought Seattle was a beautiful city, but that it rained too much. He said that he had been staying at the Bayview Hotel for three weeks, and that it hadn't stopped raining since he had arrived. Of course, he said, this wouldn't have surprised him if it hadn't been July! Peter replied that he should have brought warmer clothes. He then continued by saying that he was going to fly to Hawaii the following week, and he that he couldn't wait to enjoy some sunny weather. Both Jack and I commented that Peter was a lucky person indeed.
Exercise 2: Ask you partner the following questions making sure to take good notes. After you have finished the questions, find a new partner and report what you have learned about your first partner using reported speech.
What is your favorite sport and how long have you been playing/doing it? What are your plans for your next vacation? How long have you known your best friend? Can you give me a description of him/her? What kind of music do you like? Have you always listened to that kind of music? What did you use to do when you were younger that you don't do anymore? Do you have any predictions about the future? Can you tell me what you do on a typical Saturday afternoon? What were you doing yesterday at this time? Which two promises will you make concerning learning English?
