    Advantages:
   •       BYOD programs generally shift costs to the user.
   •       worker satisfaction. Users have the laptops and smartphones they have for a reason
   •       BYOD devices tend to be more cutting edge, so the organization gets the benefit of the latest
           features and capabilities.
       •   Users also upgrade to the latest hardware more frequently than the painfully slow refresh
           cycles at most organizations.
       Disadvantages:
       •   By embracing BYOD, organizations lose much of the control over the IT hardware and how it is
           used.
       •   Rules of engagement are required and expectations are stated up front.
       •   Minimum security requirements are needed. Even mandate company-sanctioned security
           tools should be used, as a condition for allowing personal devices to connect to company data
           and network resources
    •      Issue of compliance and ownership arise when it comes to data:
             •   Businesses that fall under compliance mandates such as PCI DSS, HIPAA, or GLBA have certain
                 requirements related to information security and safeguarding specific data.
       •   In the event that a worker is let go, or leaves the company of their own accord, segregating
           and retrieving company data can be a problem. (there should be a policy in place that governs how
           that data will be retrieved from the personal laptop and/or smartphone)
    •      Organizations only have two options for compensation, stipend programs and expense back
           programs.

   • Highly Regulated Industries Embrace BYOD: Large companies from the Finance/Insurance and
     Healthcare industries dominate the overall BYOD picture, with Retail/Wholesale and Government
     less likely to support BYOD, at least right now.

   • Big Companies Get BYOD: 80 percent of those supporting BYOD have over 2,000 employees; 60
     percent have over 5,000 employees; and 35 percent have over 10,000 employees.
   • Employees Are Willing to Pay for Personal Choice: 50 percent of companies with BYOD models
     are requiring employees to cover all costs – and they are happy to do so; 45 percent provide their
     employees with a stipend or “expense back” option to help subsidize the cost of their mobile
     device or service plan.

   • Offering BYOD Stipend Increases Adoption: Companies that offer BYOD stipends have the
     highest rate of employees using mobile devices when compared to companies that require
     employees cover all BYOD costs themselves, or allow for expense‐back of service plan costs, but
     limit to users with management pre‐approval.

   • BYOD Goes Global: Many believe that BYOD “doesn’t work” outside U.S. due to international
     privacy laws and/or greater exposure to highly variable roaming costs. Our data clearly shows
     otherwise – with nearly half (44.9 percent) of respondents indicating they are already deploying
     BYOD programs in multiple countries.

Market Players
The industry is still two years or more away from wide-scale adoption of any kind of
BYOD enablement.

    • AT&T announced plans to offer a new service, called Toggle that will
      securely run enterprise apps like email on any Android phone a worker
      chooses to buy.
   • VMware is teaming up with LG to offer virtualized mobile devices that
     will allow a single phone to run two operating systems, one for business
     use and one for personal use.

    • Red Bend and Open Kernel Labs are all developing types of virtualization
      technology to separate enterprise apps on phones.

    • Citrix is also rumored to be repackaging its products and services to make
      it easier for customers to use its virtualization, remote-access and cloud
      services to offer in the short term the kind of virtual work-device.
