Presentation at LASI 2016 - Bilbao, Spain The field of learning analytics (LA) is working on the definition of frameworks that structure the legal and ethical issues that stakeholders have to take into account regarding LA solutions. While current efforts in this direction focus on institutional and development aspects, this paper reflects on small-scale classroom oriented approaches that aim at supporting teachers in their practice. This reflection is based on three studies where we applied our teacher-led learning analytics approach in higher education and primary school contexts. We describe the ethical issues that emerged in these learning scenarios, and discuss them according to three dimensions: the overall learning analytics approach, the particular solution to learning analytics adopted, and the educational contexts where the analytics are applied.

A Systematic Review On Educational Data Mining

Educational Data Mining is used to predict the future learning behavior of the student. It is still a research topic for the researcher who wants do better result from the prediction of the student. The results of all these techniques help the teachers, management, and administrator to draft new rules and policy for the improvement of the educational standards and hence overall results and student retention. Taking this point in mind work has been done to find the slow learner in a High School class and then provide timely help to them for improving their overall result. There are lots of techniques of data mining are available for use but we are selecting only those techniques which are mostly used by different research for their result prediction like J48, REPTree, Naive Bayes, SMO, Multilayer Perceptron. On the collected dataset Multilayer Perception classification algorithm gives 87.43% accuracy when using whole dataset as training dataset and SMO and J48 gives 69.00% accuracy when using 10-fold cross validation algorithm.

Most of the education institutions used classroom teaching using advanced technologies such as smart class environment, visualization by power point projector and etc. This research work focusses on such technologies used for the improvement of student’s performance using some of the Data Mining (DM) techniques particularly classification and clustering. Information repositories (Educational Data Bases, Data Warehouses) are the source place for collecting study materials and use them for their learning purposes is the number one source for preparation of examinations. Particularly, this research work analyzes about the use of clustering and classification algorithms to enable the student’s performances and their learning capabilities using these modern technologies. During the study period, the student’s family background and their economic status are also play a very important role in their daily activities. These things are not considered in this survey work. A comparative study is carried out in this work by comparing students performance based on their results. The comparison is carried out based on the results of some of the classification and clustering algorithms. Finally, it states that the best algorithm for the improvement of students performance using these algorithms.

In this webinar, Prof Hendrik Drachsler will reflect on the process of applying learning analytics solutions within higher education settings, its implications, and the critical lessons learned in the Trusted Learning Research Program. The talk will focus on the experience of edutec.science research collective consisting of researchers from the Netherlands and Germany that contribute to the Trusted Learning Analytics (TLA) research program. The TLA program aims to provide actionable and supportive feedback to students and stands in the tradition of human-centered learning analytics concepts. Thus, the TLA program aims to contribute to unfolding the full potential of each learner. It, therefore, applies sensor technology to support psychomotor as well as web technology to support meta-cognitive and collaborative learning skills with high-informative feedback methods. Prof. Drachsler applies validated measurement instruments from the field of psychometric and investigates to what extent Learning Analytics interventions can reproduce the findings of these instruments. During this webinar, Prof Drachsler will discuss the lessons learned from implementing TLA systems. He will touch on TLA prerequisites like ethics, privacy, and data protection, as well as high informative feedback for psychomotor, collaborative, and meta-cognitive competencies and the ongoing research towards a repository, methods, tools and skills that facilitate the uptake of TLA in Germany and the Netherlands.

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted global society in many ways, not least education, with schools and universities moving many teaching and learning practices online. This paper examines the response of educational institutions in employing learning analytics, an approach which includes the collection and analysis of student data to understand and optimise teaching and learning. A systematic review of publications is undertaken and key themes identified in an attempt to answer the question: How did learning analytics allow educators to respond to learners’ risks and challenges during the pandemic? This study illustrates issues around the rapid adoption of technological solutions outside of the institution; inequality of internet access; considerations of data privacy and longer term consequences; and the need for an agile, but considered policy response.

A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is a type of online learning environment that has the potential to increase students’ access to education. However, the low completion rates in MOOCs suggest that student engagement and progression in the courses are problematic. Following the increasing adoption of gamification in education, it is possible that gamification can also be effectively adopted in MOOCs to enhance students’ motivation and increase completion rates. Yet at present, the extent to which gamification has been examined in MOOCs is not known. Considering the myriad gamification elements that can be adopted in MOOCs (e.g., leaderboards and digital badges), this theoretical research study reviews scholarly publications examining gamification of MOOCs. The main purpose is to provide an overview of studies on gamification in MOOCs, types of research studies, theories applied, gamification elements implemented, methods of implementation, the overall impact of gamification in MOOCs, and the challenges faced by researchers and practitioners when implementing gamification in MOOCs. The results of the literature study indicate that research on gamification in MOOCs is in its early stages. While there are only a handful of empirical research studies, results of the experiments generally showed a positive relation between gamification and student motivation and engagement. It is concluded that there is a need for further studies using educational theories to account for the effects of employing gamification in MOOCs.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
