1. Rock
In the generic Rock music video, viewers would expect to see the use of
instrument such as Guitars, Drums, Etc.
Furthermore, the entire band would often be seen performing their song,
whether it be at a live performance or in an area which suits the music
video.
Another trait seen amongst a lot of rock music videos is what is shown
throughout the video. By this, I mean whether the video shows a story,
typed lyrics or anything else. The trait seen amongst a lot of rock videos is
the showing of a story throughout the song, as in most rock songs there is
often some sort of message behind the lyrics, which is shown better
through the story of the video.
2. Pop
In the generic pop music video, the overall feeling generated by it seems to often be a lot
happier and positive when compared to other music genres.
In a lot of these music videos, there are often dancers who are gender-based, but vary on
the gender of the main artist. For example, if the artist was Male, then the dancers
would, in most cases, be female, and vice versa.
Furthermore, pop music videos don’t usually show stories as often as rock videos do, as
there aren’t as many messages behind the songs in the pop genre as there are in the rock
genre. For this reason, a story would often be unnecessary within the pop genre,
however they are shown occasionally to emphasize what the song is based upon, such as
a relationship break-up or partying, which appear to be the most commonly used themes
throughout the genre.
3. Rap
The overall feeling within the generic rap music video often varies between calm & mellow
and angry with the refusal to conform to society. Within the calmer examples, there are
often references to marijuana usage and alcohol consumption, whereas in the music which
portrays the feeling of anger, the artist focused on is in less of a mellow scene and would
often be scene walking towards the camera (with intentions of it actually being the viewer)
and keeping direct eye-contact to portray the seriousness within their song.
Within most rap music videos, the artist/s involved are often seen in more urban areas of the
world, such as in major cities or on any generic street. It is rare to see a rap music video
which includes some form of story, as there isn’t usually a hidden message behind the songs,
and the video would often just contain the artist and then maybe a few dancers.
