Tsunamis are rare on the East Coast but they do occur from time to time. Problem is that people are not aware of the threat and unprepared if a large tsunami should hit.

9. Be Prepared
• Preparation is key in preventing loss of life
• Most deaths are a result of not being
prepared for a disaster that occurs
• Having equipment and supplies suited for
specific situations is critically important
• We have designed a survival kit customized
for a tsunami emergency and/or extreme
flooding.
10. Tsunami Kit Requirements
• Target consumers are individual households
or businesses in potentially affected areas
• Each kit should be capable of supporting 6
individuals for 4 days as most rescues occur
within that time frame
• Able to keep individuals alive on water or
land
12. Kit Specifications
• Dimensions will be approximately 2’ x 4’ x
3’ so it can be transported by one or two
persons
• The container will be waterproof
• The container will have built-in pontoons so
it will float even when full
13. Life raft for 6 people
• A life raft supports
6 people and
emergency
provisions
• It is self inflating
• It is easily seen by
rescue personnel
14. Life Jackets
• Life jackets provide
support for people
even if unconscious
• They are easy to put on
• One-size-fits-all to
accommodate children
16. Sea Water Filter
• Provides an
emergency ration
of water for 6
people
• Converts sea water
into drinkable
water
17. First Aid Kit and Other Items
• Off the shelf
first aid kit
• Utensils
• Radio
• Flashlight
18. East Coast Tsunami
• Risk of a large tsunami hitting the East Coast is
small, but tangible
• Devastation may be large because of population
• Underwater cliffs off the coast of Virginia can
cause an underwater landslide
• Coastal areas need to be prepared as there may
be little warning
• Be Prepared!
