Possible Requirement for The
Future
Consider: You didn't learn our alphabet all those years ago because you knew
you'd be reading Moby Dick this semester. In the same way, you don't take
algebra now because you know that you'll be factoring quadratics in ten years.
You should take math and science courses now for much the same reason you
learned your letters back then: to lay the foundation for bigger and better things
to come, and to open up new opportunities for future pleasures and successes.
Nobody can say with assurance what skills will be needed twenty years from
now. But what intelligent person would want to cut himself off from future
opportunities and growth by refusing to expose himself to at least some of the
knowledge which will be foundational for whatever is yet to come?
Even in the short term, you'll need some of the skills from algebra. If you're going
to work with formulas in spreadsheets, you will need to be comfortable with
variables and formulas. That's algebra. If you're going to be in meetings involving
reports with tables, charts, and graphs, you'll need to be able to interpret these
intelligently if you hope to hold your own in the discussions. That's algebra.
~Elizabeth staple on www.purplemath.com
Discover the World
Simply put all the math that you ever learn is really a tool for understanding the
world around us. And believe me, we have only begun to scratch the surface of
understanding how the world works. Algebra is a stepping stone to learning
about this wonderful universe that we live in. With it you have the tools to
understand a great many things and you also have the skills needed to continue
on and learn Trigonometry and Calculus which are essential for exploring other
types of problems and phenomena around us. So, try not to think of Algebra as a
boring list of rules and procedures to memorize. Consider algebra as a gateway
to exploring the world around us all.
~ Jason Gibson on www.mathgoodies.com
Mental Skinny
Learning math and solving problems is a mental
exercise that improves your general thinking ability. It
is like exercise for your brain. Want to become
smarter in every way? Learn math.

Old Folks and
the Their Ways
with Math
The Renaissance
Old

Discrimination
The Renaissance
The Renaissance saw a rebirth of Classical Greek and Roman culture
and ideas, among them the study of mathematics as a relevant
subject needed to understand nature and the arts. Two major reasons
drove Renaissance artists towards the pursuit of mathematics. First,
painters needed to figure out how to depict three-dimensional scenes
on a two-dimensional canvas. Second, philosophers and artists alike
were convinced that mathematics was the true essence of the
physical world and that the entire universe, including the arts, could
be explained in geometric terms. In light of these factors,
Renaissance artists became some of the best applied mathematicians
of their times
By: www.wikipedia.org
Old Discrimination
There was a time not so long ago when children in middle schools were assigned to "tracks" according
to what "everybody knew" each child would "need". (This tracking was why middle schools were
invented in the first place.) Educational "experts" presumed to "know" what the various children
"needed", based on culturally-based (but unjustified) presumptions. The educators then locked
children into "appropriate" tracks, thereby locking many children out of college before they'd even
begun high school. students would have been assigned to something like "consumer math": low-level
math that was presumed to be "useful" for "that sort". Blonde, blue-eyed Tiffany might have been
expected to marry well after a short and trivial "career", so she'd have been assigned to bookkeeping.
Only Eustace James Whittington III would have had any chance of attending college, so only he would
have been steered into the algebra class.

Predict the Future
Using math, James Maxwell predicted the existence of
radio waves 20 years before Heinrich Hertz actually
discovered them

Uncover the Universe
In 1905, astronomer Percival Lowell observed that the planet Uranus was moving
irregularly and, through mathematics, determined that there had to be another
large body affecting its behavior, leading to Pluto's discovery in 1930.

Einstein & Algebra~ Got to
Love It!!
Many of the central topics in Einstein's theory of special relativity can be
understood only using algebra. For example, it turns out if you are traveling on a
spaceship near the speed of light time actually slows down for you relative to
your friends back on Earth. In other words, if you were to fly in a spaceship near
the speed of light for some time and then you returned to Earth, you would find
that you had aged very little while your friends on Earth have aged a great deal!
Albert Einstein coined this phenomenon "time dilation" and it can easily be
calculated using only Algebra.

Chef
Simple math concepts such as multiplying fractions and manipulating ratios
make it easy to adjust cooking recipes to the number of people you want to serve.
Learn math and make your personal life function better.
By: jolynn colbert on www.ezinearticles.com
Artist
Math can help you create art. Not only will you want to get the correct sizes and
color mixtures, math is used in almost every aspect of art. Major universities offer
an entire class called "Mathematics in Art and Architecture". Techniques like
tiling, tessellation, perspective, pattern, and symmetry are some of the concepts
used in art that require the use of math. Make yourself and your world more
beautiful. Learn math.
By: jolynn colbert on www.ezinearticles.com
Interior Decorator
Math is needed when you must decide how to create the very best arrangement
for furniture, equipment for large groups of people at work or for a special
occasion at home.
By: jolynn colbert on www.ezinearticles.com
Animator
Wasn’t Toy Story 3 the coolest family film of the year? According to When Will I
Use Math?, an Animator uses linear algebra to show the way that an object is
rotated and shifted and made larger and smaller. As well as prized jobs at Disney
and Pixar, animators can work in computer and console game development,
television programming, broadband internet animation, broadcast and web
advertising, education, research, and military and corporate training.

Now, why do I think we have to learn math?
 First Answer. For everyday life: from cooking to drawing; to calculate the

discount you’ll receive on a 35% coupon; to figuring out how much time
you have to sleep in on a weekday morning. Math is all around us and
most people don’t even realize it.
 Second Answer. To have a really, freaking awesome job. I personally don’t

want to be just another 30-something waiter or cashier. I want to have an
array of options to choose from, and math is the key to that wish .
 Third Answer. So that I can take advantage of the opportunities that were

not available to women and minorities in the past (see slide #8)
