1. THE LIFE OF NELSON MANDELA
“Education is the most
powerful weapon which you
can use to change the
world.”
Nelson Mandela
2. CHILDHOOD
• Born on the 18th of July, 1918 in the small African
Village of Transkei.
• Nelson attended his first school and this is where he
was given the name Nelson.
• He went to Fort Hare University and this is where he
met his two close friends that later became colleagues.
One was Oliver Tambo and the other K.D Matanzima.
3. WHAT HAPPENED NEXT…
Nelson ran away from an arranged marriage with his
cousin Justice. He then met his first wife Evelyn
Mase. They married within a few months and had 4
children, one that unfortunately died at the age of 9
months. They divorced later in 1958. He then joined
the ANC and then went off to become on of their
leaders.
4. EMERGING AS A LEADER… ANC
The ANC achieved many things. However, the biggest
achievement of all was that apartheid has ended. It wasn’t
always that easy. For a long time Nelson Mandela and his
colleagues had been working hard using passive resistance
,however, when it didn’t work they turned to violence. After
they had convinced the majority of the ANC that violence
would work they set up a military wing. However, this
backfired and all the men were sent to jail or fled into exile.
5. ROBBEN ISLAND
From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben
Island served as a place of banishment,
isolation and imprisonment. Today it is a
World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant
reminder to the newly democratic South
Africa of the price paid for freedom.
Robben Island may have been
used to train soldiers and as a
prison but it is also home to some
incredible heritage and wildlife.
6. Nelson Mandela was sent to Robben
island prison for plotting to
overthrow the government. He was
sent to prison in November 1962 and
was released in 1990.
