History of Mercedes Benz
Mercedes Benz is a very well
recognized and respected name in car
manufacturers. The name itself carries
a reputation of quality and
craftsmanship. Vehicles made by this
company are durable and reliable.
Who started the company and where
did the first Mercedes Benz come
from?
Over a hundred years ago Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz lived about 60 miles
apart in Germany. They were both native Germans born only 10 years apart from
each other. Both boys grew up with a large amount of exposure to the machines
of the day. No one dreamed that the two could come together since they both
approached building cars in different ways.
In 1886 Mr. Benz constructed a motorized tricycle and then followed it with a
four-wheeler design in 1893. Also in 1886, Mr. Daimler built what was called a
horseless carriage. A couple years later he indulged in a business deal with
William Steinway who agreed to produce Daimler’s products in the United States.
Steinway made Mercedes cars and light trucks for three years. But in 1890
Daimler died and left his company to Wilhelm Mayback who was his chief
engineer. That same year a special car was made and produced for Emil Jellinek.
This car was named Mercedes after his daughter. Benz created the counterpart,
2. the Parsifil in 1903. Both car manufacturers’ sites were switched to producing war
materials during World War I.
After the War ended the economy in Germany steadily declined. There was an
imposed 15 percent luxury tax just for owning a vehicle and there was not any
fuel available. Benz tried a couple of unsuccessful merges as the economy
continued to grow worse. In 1923 there were very few cars registered. However,
in the United States about half were Fords but Benz built only about a thousand.
Benz and DMG signed an “Agreement of Mutual Interest” but each kept their
individual business identities.
When they merged the two companies the original Mercedes Benz insignia was
developed. It has a laurel around a three-pointed star. The two-fold name was
above and below the emblem. The businesses formed a very successful merge
and production shot up to around 7,000 vehicles in 1927. In 1930 the company
launched the most prestigious and largest car manufacturer. The company has
continued to product quality vehicles and enjoyed success until the present time.
Mercedes Benz is an established company which is highly respected for the
quality of their vehicles.
