Once you choose someone to talk to your instant messaging program sends any messages you choose directly to the IP (internet protocol) address and port of the person you want to talk to. This is how conversations happen quickly and ‘instantly’, as you aren't sending a message to a server and back to another computer. Something that could be improved about instant messaging is that strange people or even perverts can add you and if it is a young child using the software they will not know how to delete the contact so to improve instant messaging it should be easier to delete contacts.
