2. What do I have to do?
 You MUST use
quotation marks
 -> when question ask
you to quote from
passage.
 You can leave out the
quotation mark
 -> if question asks you
for a word/ phrase/
sentence/ expression.

 every word must be necessary
 and relevant
 Does questions ask for consecutive words?
 (successive words, or word written one after another)
 Note exact number of words in your answer
 if question ask to quote/write down a specific number of
words.

 if question ask for a phrase
 Do not give a sentence
 because a phrase is a short group of words whereas a
sentence begin with a capital letter and ends with a full
stop.
 If question asks you to quote an ‘expression’
 A single word can be the shortest answer
 The longest answer is a sentence.

5. Examples of past year papers
1. Later on in the passage, the author refers to the
volcano’s ‘long respose’ (line 23). Write down
three consecutive words used in paragraph 2
which carry the same idea.
2. The author believes that these countries now
cannot free themselves from the effects of tourism.
Write down one word he uses in the paragraph to
convey this idea.
