Week 1: starting...
Nível 5 - CAE
If you’re taking this course, it means you’re preparing to take the CAE exam. As the
exam is divided in five parts, the course will follow the same division.
Besides studying for each of the papers (Reading, Writing, Use of English, Listening
and Speaking), you’ll also read 6 books.
In this first week, read the explanation about the exam. We really recommend you
read carefully, so that you can understand what the exam is all about.

Nível 5 - CAE
After this, let’s concentrate on Reading. First of all, take the diagnostic exam, called
Test Yourself. Your grade might not be as good as you’d like it to be, don’t worry. It’s a
diagnostic exam. After studying the skill for a few weeks, you’ll take another exam and
this time, your grade will be higher.
So, after this exam, read the explanation for Part 1 and take the 4 activities that follow.
Also read the explanation for Part 2 and take only the first activity.
Finish the week reading the introduction for the book Para-life Rescue!

Week 2: starting...
Nível 5 - CAE
Let’s divide the week in six parts – I mean, six days. Take the last day to relax.
Reading / Part 2 / Activity 2. This activity deals with coherence, cohesion and relative
pronouns. You’re supposed to join the sentence halves so that they make sense.
Reading / Part 2 / Activity 3. Now, you’re going to read a ten-part story and put it in
order. After organizing the sentences, check if the story makes sense.
Reading / Part 3 / Explanation. In this paper you’ll deal with a long text taken from
different sources, such as literary texts, newspaper, magazine articles, or promotional
material. After reading the text, you’ll answer seven four-multiple choice questions.

Reading / Part 3 / Activity 1. You’ll read a magazine article and then answer seven
multiple choice-questions about this article.
Reading / Part 3 / Activity 2. There are eight multiple-choice questions in which the
answer is implied. It means that the answer is not explicitly stated, so you have to
analyse it carefully before going for an answer.
Reading / Part 3 / Activity 3. Sometimes we don’t know the meaning of a word when
we’re reading a text. It’s really common and happens a lot even in our first language.
The point is: we can’t waste time concentrating on what we don’t know. In fact, the
other words we understand might help us sort out the hidden meaning of the new
vocabulary and this exercise deals exactly with this.

Nível 5 - CAE
Reading / Part 4 / Explanation. To accomplish this task, it’s important to understand detail,
attitude or opinion in a text.
Reading / Part 4 / Activity 1. You’ll read five hotel reviews. After reading the reviews, match
them accordingly to the fifteen descriptions. Naturally, each review may be used more than
once.
Reading / Part 4 / Activity 2. This exercise is similar to the previous one, but this time you’ll
deal with film reviews.
Para-life Rescue! / pages 4-19. The book talks about a new way of saving, or rescuing
people from drowning in the ocean. Read from page 4 to page 9 to discover how it works.
The book also talks about the city of Rio de Janeiro. Do you live in Rio? Or, have you ever
visited Rio?
Look at these sentences about the CAE – Paper 1 – Reading – Part 3 and have a nice week:
A longer text followed by seven four-option multiple-choice questions. Emphasis is on the
understanding of a long text, including detail, opinion, tone, purpose, main idea,
implication, attitude, and organization.

Week 3: starting...
Nível 5 - CAE
Good to see you here. Below, is the study plan for this week:
Reading / Test Yourself Again. Today you’ll take the diagnostic reading test to check
how much you’ve improved. There are twenty multiple-choice questions to check your
ability.
Practice Test 1 / Paper 1 / Reading. Your material contains two Practice Tests. In the
end of the course you’ll take the second Practice Test as if you were taking the real
CAE. For a while, use the first Practice Test as soon as you finish studying for each of
the Papers. Due to this, take the Reading Paper Practice Test 1 today.
Writing / Test Yourself. Let’s see how well you can write. Answer the twenty-two
multiple-choice questions and check the result. Don’t worry if it’s not what you
wanted it to be. You’ll have time to study and improve your performance.

Writing / Part 1 / Explanation. The first part of this Paper tests your ability to create a
text. This text is a response to certain instructions which could be an article, a report,
a proposal, or a letter.
Writing / Part 1 / Activity 1. This first activity asks you to write a proposal. In a CAE
proposal, you’re expected to give factual information and make suggestions which will
be followed by your readers. Read the prompt and then type your response.
Writing / Part 1 / Activity 2. You’ll read a six-paragraph report. Then you’re supposed
to match each paragraph with its correct heading. Check how well you can organize a
text.

Nível 5 - CAE
Writing / Part 1 / Activity 3. How much do you know about coordinate and
subordinate conjunctions? Use the correct conjunction to each sentence.
Writing / Part 2 / Explanation. You can choose one task from a choice of five
questions (including the set text options). You may be asked to write any of the
following: an article, a contribution to a longer piece, an essay, an information sheet, a
letter, a proposal, a report, a review or a competition entry. You must write 220-260
words.
Writing / Part 2 / Activity 1. This activity asks you to write a letter of application. This
kind of letter is a formal one, so you have to use formal phrases such as: Dear Sir /
Madam, To whom it may concern, I am writing with regard to …, I look forward to
hearing from you …

Para-life Rescue! / pages 22-23. You’ll read a 390-word text by Peter Stevenson who
talks about his experience at a beach in San Diego, California. How long does it take
you to read the entire text?
Look at these sentences about the CAE – Paper 2 – Writing test and have a nice week:
The Writing Paper lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes and it is divided in two parts. You
must answer both parts – a compulsory one in part 1, one from a choice of five in
part 2.

Nível 5 - CAE
Writing / Part 2 / Activity 2. You’ll read five paragraphs, each of them representing a
text type: a report, a book review, a letter to a friend, a letter for a job application and
a letter of reference. Can you identify each text type?
Writing / Part 2 / Activity 3. Your job is to identify if the language presented in each of
the eight sentences is formal or informal.
Writing / Part 2 / Activity 4. You’ve been practicing for a while, now it’s time to write a
contribution to a larger piece.
Writing / Test Yourself Again. In this diagnostic test you’ll classify language in two
categories – formal or informal. Then, you’ll read ten sentences and decide which text
type each of them represents.

Practice Test 1 / Writing. You’ll have the opportunity to face both Parts 1 and 2 of the
Writing Paper.
Use of English / Test Yourself. You’ll read two texts and insert the correct word in each
of the gaps to complete the texts. To check how much you already know there are
twenty multiple-choice questions. Then you’ll have ten sets of three sentences each.
All of the three sentences in a set need to receive the same prefix or suffix.
Use of English / Part 1 / Explanation. The first part of the Use of English Paper is a
modified cloze test containing twelve gaps and followed by twelve four-option
multiple-choice items. You must choose the option that correctly fills the gap.
Use of English / Part 1 / Activity 1. You’ll read a gapped text and then choose the
correct option for each of the gaps.

Use of English / Part 1 / Activity 3. There are eight sentences for you to choose the
correct option to complete them.
Use of English / Part 1 / Activity 4. The activity helps you improve lexical knowledge.
You’ll read a sentence containing two underlined words and another word in bold.
You’re supposed to choose the correct word which is closest in meaning to the word in
bold. The underlined words might help you.
Use of English / Part 2 / Explanation. The second part of the Use of English test is an
Open Cloze containing fifteen gaps. You must write one word to fill each gap.
Use of English / Part 2 / Activity 1. You’ll face an activity as it appears on the test. That
is, you have a text with fifteen gaps.

Use of English / Part 2 / Activity 2. Your job is to match the sentence halves. The goal
of this activity is to help you improve your lexico-grammatical understanding of a text
involving relative clauses.
Use of English / Part 2 / Activity 3. Complete a text with the correct option, taking
into account that two words won’t be used.
Use of English / Part 2 / Activity 4. Here you’re supposed to fill in the blanks in the
eight sentences so that they become coherent. Show you’re able to deal with phrasal
verbs.
Use of English / Part 3 / Explanation. The third part of the Use of English test is the
Word Formation. In this part you must read a text containing ten gaps. Each gap
corresponds a word. The stems of the missing words are given beside the text.

Use of English / Part 3 / Activity 1. This first activity is similar to the one which
appears on the test. Take the opportunity to check how well you can deal with this
task.
Tornado Chase / pages 2-3. Tornadoes are large storms that can cause huge amounts
of damage and destruction. Most people run from tornadoes, but some researchers
chase them! They want to study the storms to develop better methods for predicting
them. How do they find these tornadoes? How do they collect their information?
Look at these sentences about the CAE – Paper 3 – Use of English – Part 3: In a word
formation task, you may have to make more than one change to a word.

Nível 5 - CAE
Use of English / Part 3 / Activity 2. This activity deals with different prefixes. Make
new words by adding the correct prefix to the words given.
Use of English / Part 3 / Activity 3. This activity is similar to the previous one except
that this time you’ll deal with suffixes.
Use of English / Part 3 / Activity 4. You’ll see fifteen sentences with an underlined
word in each of them. If the underlined word is correct, just type “correct”. If it’s not
correct, then type the word correctly in the space provided.
Use of English / Part 4 / Explanation. The forth part of the Use of English test is called
Gapped Sentences. There are five questions, each of them contains three separate
sentences. Each sentence contains one gap, which must be completed with one
appropriate word.

Use of English / Part 4 / Activity 1. You’ll see three sentences containing a gap in each
of them. All the three gaps must be filled with the same word.
Use of English / Part 4 / Activity 2. Choose the correct option to complete each of the
ten sentences in this activity showing how well you deal with phrasal verbs.
Use of English / Part 4 / Activity 3. Still dealing with phrasal verbs, now you’re
supposed to complete the ten sentences in this activity.
Use of English / Part 5 / Explanation. The fifth and last part of the Use of English test
is the Key Word Transformations. There are eight separate questions, each with a lead-
in sentence and a gapped second sentence to be completed in three to six words,
including a given ‘key word’.

Use of English / Part 5 / Activity 1. This activity is similar to the one which appears on
the test. If necessary, read again how to deal with this kind of activity before taking it.
Tornado Chase / pages 4-27. A team of tornado chasers led by Tim Samaras are joined
by photographer Carsten Peter as they set out during storm season in the U.S. While
they have some thrilling moments, the preparation and waiting that goes into the
chase are sometimes frustrating. Their team is attempting to place a probe inside a
tornado to collect data that will help scientists build a better warning system, so
people can escape these dangerous storms.
Look at these sentences about the CAE – Paper 3 – Use of English:
In Paper 3, Part 5 you have to complete the second sentence so that it has a similar
meaning to the first sentence. It’s important to check carefully that the meaning of
the second sentence is similar to the first one.

Nível 5 - CAE
Use of English / Part 5 / Activity 2. The activity asks you to match sentence halves. A
good way to make this activity easier is associating vocabulary. For example: the word
fraud is related to the word illegally. Go on this way and you’ll see how easy the
exercise can be.
Use of English / Part 5 / Activity 3. This activity checks how well you can use
vocabulary. Based on your knowledge on phrasal verbs, fixed expressions, collocations,
etc., fill in the blanks with the appropriate word.

Nível 5 - CAE
Use of English / Test Yourself Again. After having prepared, now you can take the
diagnostic test. There are 17 exercises to test your ability. In ten of them you will write
a sentence which means the same as the sentence given, but in different words.
Remember that you can use between three to six words to fill in the blank. Then you’ll
have to add prefixes and / or suffixes to the words given in order to complete a text.
Finally, read about celebrities over 50 and choose the appropriate word to complete
the text.
Listening / Test Yourself. Let’s see how well you deal with the listening ability. You can
take notes as you listen. These notes will be useful to you, so do it. After listening to
the first audio you’ll answer eight multiple-choice questions with 4 options in each.
For the second audio you’ll answer six questions. Listen to the third audio and check if
the sentences related to them are true or false.
Listening / Part 1 / Explanation. From now on, you’ll be prepared to take the Listening
Paper which is divided in four parts. Each part contains a recorded text or texts and
corresponding comprehension tasks. You can hear each part twice. There are thirty
questions in total.

Listening / Part 1 / Activity 1. Always remember to take notes as you listen. Then
choose the correct option for the questions that follow.

Listening / Part 3 / Activity 2. Now you’ll have to show how well you can understand
the attitudes and opinions of the speakers. Listen to a conversation between two
women in order to answer the questions.
Listening / Part 3 / Activity 3. Practice how to follow longer interviews and
discussions. The topic of this audio is about the exchange rate. It’s vital to take notes
due to the length of the recorded text.

negotiated decision.

Vocabulary / Strategy 1 / Explanation. The first vocabulary strategy is called Defining
Vocabulary. This is useful in all the papers, especially in the Use of English paper.
Follow these three successful steps:
1) Remember that context, grammar, and collocations are interrelated. Study words in
chunks, it will make things easier for you.
2) Keep a recording notebook. Keep there verbs, prepositions, etc. and how they
collocate.
3) Read extensively. The more you read the better your vocabulary will be.
Vocabulary / Strategy 1 / Activity 1. Match the sentence halves. The words in the
sentences will help you figure out the meaning of the words in bold.
Vocabulary / Strategy 1 / Activity 2. Read a short text about spiders and fill in the
blanks with an appropriate word. Before thinking about the word, think about what
kind of word you need in each blank: a verb, an adverb, an adjective, a noun, etc.

Vocabulary / Strategy 2 / Explanation. The second vocabulary strategy is called
Understanding Collocations. You’ll learn that reading a text is much more than
recognising individual words. The really important point is how they work together to
make meaning. Learn language in chunks rather than words alone. As you read,
underline useful collocations.
Vocabulary / Strategy 2 / Activity 1. In this first activity complete a text with one word
in each space.
Vocabulary / Strategy 2 / Activity 2. In the second activity complete the sentences
with a correct collocation.
Vocabulary / Strategy 3 / Explanation. The third vocabulary strategy is called The
Grammar of Words. It’s important to understand the grammatical relationships that
words have with each other. To learn more, study the explanation for this strategy
before doing the activity.

Here is a tip for CAE – Paper 1 – Reading – Part 1:
At first glance, a writer’s attitude towards what they are writing about is not always
clear. Look at these three main ways in which a writer may express their views
indirectly:
1) Use of positive or negative vocabulary to describe something.
