The document describes Auburn University Libraries' use of the NASIG Core Competencies for Electronic Resource Librarians to assess their electronic resources department. In 2013, their initial self-assessment identified skills gaps. Over time, through training, practice, and expanding their roles, staff strengthened areas like acquisitions, licensing, and records management. The competencies provided a framework for professional development and improved collaboration across the department.

Core
The Core Competencies Task Force developed a document
describing core competencies for serials and electronic resources
librarians. It provides librarian educators with a basis for developing
curriculum with a specialized focus. Employers might use the
Competencies as a basis for describing these specialized positions
and to establish criteria upon which to evaluate the performance of
those who hold them. It is based on current research and
complements ALA's Core Competences for Librarianship.
