This presentation was part of the NCVO event - 'It's Our Community research workshop - East of England'. This event was organised by NCVO, BIG Society CIC and Peterborough Council for Voluntary Service, to look at examples of community led funding. Louise Gooch (Embedding Ambassadors in Community Health) gave a presentation at the 'It's Our Community' workshop in Bury St Edmunds. - European Integration Funding project, which we started in July 2011 and will run until June 2014. EIF projects can only be funded to a maximum of 75%, and they have a minimum sum to apply for – £300,000 for the 3 years of the project (or £100,000 per year if a project is shorter). They also pay in arrears (first 50% within 1 month of starting but then delays of up to a year, due to audit arrangements). So difficult for small community groups to tap into this sort of funding, despite the EIF wanting them to be the ones to deliver projects. Our target group is health professionals, rather than the new migrants, to improve their ‘cultural competence’ in order to reduce well-documented health inequalities, among third country migrants (Marmot review – health inequalities – Bangladesh community, poorest health among minorities in UK)
- We advertise workshops, source and register delegates, provide trainers with attendance lists, compile feedback and undertake observations and follow up calls to delegates Resource packs – refreshments, folders for delegates, ream of paper for any printing of handouts. We don’t want the groups to be out of pocket because of delivering our workshops.
- Data speaks for itself – we have exceeded our funders’ targets, both in terms of quantity and quality (original target - 630 participants) Picture is of one of our trainers in Cambridge, working at Addenbrookes. In terms of added value, she probably exemplifies our project the best. Community groups often have highly qualified staff who struggle to find work in the UK without any work experience in the local job market. This trainer, a PhD student is now working at Cambridge University. However, we have not been able to cite these sorts of benefits to EIF funders, as skills falls under ESF funding rather than EIF, although I am sure you can recognise the link between work and integration.
- Focus on safeguarding – social services, education plus police and health – cultural practices that need to be challenged – Female Genital Mutilation, forced marriages and honour based violence – working with interpreters to be able to hear first hand from vulnerable young people.
