Review/ evaluation
In my review, I am going to fully analyse on how I created my trailer ‘Betrayal’. To develop this trailer I had to collaborate
with my teammate Abdul. The first order of business was to understand what audience were we targeting and how would
the trailer appeal to that audience. We discussed and agreed on 18+. We chose 18+ because the trailer was meant to have
an effect of keeping the audience thinking thus making decide that the age range had to be high.
Trailer convention
The trailer convention, I was hoping to imitate is “Disturbia” I had chosen this specific movie because I believe that Vernon
and Jason (from my trailer) and Kale (from Disturbia) both meet on a common ground because Kale discovers a disturbing
truth that risks the people around him allowing the sense of tension rising, with my trailer I had implemented the elements
of suspicion and doubt to show this I had created the narrative where the character Vernon knows important information
and becomes the target of a killer but to have that edge I collaborated with my teammate Abdul and discussed the
potential twist of our story making the character Vernon hold all the cards where the topic of interest is what does he
know? This for us helped us with many aspects of our trailer because we had agreed on targeting teenagers for the trailer
as they were most likely to understand the narrative. The age range was 15-25 year olds. Disturbia displays enigma codes
throughout the film this aspect me and my teammate tried to replicate in our trailer. For the trailer to be more appealing
to teenagers we made the main characters to be teenagers so the use of the scripting had to be free flow in a sense where
everything in each scene was allowed to be let loose but hitting what we wanted to achieve in the scene. To make the
audience feel what we were trying to achieve in each scene we knew that locations would be pivotal in the trailer because
it was primarily aimed at teens we decided the locations would be shot in Maitland and Queens Crescent. These locations
would welcome the insight of having this trailer be aimed at teens. Another aspect of creating this trailer was to choose a
sound track to fit the trailer because from my research I had learned that music was a convention that was needed for a
thriller trailer to be successful from this I grasped the opportunity to make the music……..
I wanted the music to be gentle at first and slowly gain pace then hitting a moment where it turns dark this would create
tension and box in the feelings of the viewer.
Strengths and Weaknesses
My strengths in this task were that I had established what was going where and how the beginning would slowly build to
the end.
My weaknesses in this task was that because I didn’t have enough time to edit I found it hard trying to give my trailer that
edge that of being just more than a successful thriller trailer. Another problem that occurred was that when I tried to
access my edited work there were technical problems were the source of the videos weren’t found.
To overcome these problems I had used my free time to find a way around these problems in which I was successful.
Firstly conducting the research and planning were my strengths because on one of the tasks we had to come up with three
initial ideas and out of the three find which was the most viable to create. When we created the ideas we had to list the
pros and cons of each idea thus making the choice easier. I came to the decision that ‘Betrayal’ was easier and had met all
the conventions of a thriller film. And primarily the film ‘Betrayal’ had a better narrative then the others I had developed
another reason for choosing that idea was that location wise it was perfect to shoot within the time given. Budget wise we
didn’t need to spend, the case was just gathering the actors and figuring out what shot types we will use for the scenes.
After I had finished developing my ideas we had to form a team and decide out of our entire final picked ideas whose was
the best and meeting the criteria needed for it to be a successful trailer. We had decided that mines was the best and
decided that we should go ahead and thus enabling us to put into production
When it came to developing the production of my trailer I found it easy because I had developed a plan to use the week
given to us and plot what we were going to do each day and what would be filmed. But we came across problems for
example when it came to filming my teammate wanted to change the script or location which was frustrating. Another
problem which occurred was that the locations needed were sometimes in the middle of being busy or the lighting wasn’t
how we wanted. Our last issue was that due to the shortage of cameras we would have had to wait for another team to
finish their recording. But to overcome these problems we had come to the sense where I showed my teammate what I
wanted to achieve with the trailer and how we were going to do it just to clarify so he wasn’t confused. And if the locations
were busy we made sure to go back to class and come back later that day and go according to the plan for what was set
that day. The shortage of cameras we told our teacher our plan and detailed the times of which we would have needed the
camera and so she reserved the camera for us at those times.
When the shooting was complete I had to edit the scenes accordingly to fit the narrative developed so with movie maker I
had sourced all the clips together and put them in sequence. I reviewed the trailer and made any adjustments that I
thought had to be done in order for the trailer to excel for example the scenes shouldn’t jump the effects were carefully
used so it wasn’t irritating. The listed tasks were met and I found the editing process a success.
The purpose was to create an effective thriller trailer so I researched and planned tasks such as looking at different thriller
films and trailers. This was crucial because it helped me to get an insight of what I was hoping to produce, as I looked at
other successful thriller trailers and their conventions, I also carried out some audience research which also helped
because it pin pointed on what young adults had really favored in thriller films. My production log was pivotal in knowing
the stages I had completed and what was required to be done with the time at hand. Therefore I handed the role of what
shots needed to be taken in certain scenes to my teammate Abdul. This allowed me to carry out a list of all the props and
equipment needed for the film. Me and my teammate then par took in handing out roles and responsibilities mine were to
structure the days we were going shoot in and what we were going to shoot.
However I feel I could have made this trailer better if more time was given to us and we had better editing software.
Regardless I feel we have created a successful thriller trailer that sparks the genre thriller.
My strengths in this task was that I had established what was going where and how the beginning would slowly build to the
end.
My weaknesses in this task was that because I didn’t have enough time to edit I found it hard trying to give my trailer that
edge that of being just more than a successful thriller trailer. Another problem that occurred was that when I tried to
access my edited work there were technical problems were the source of the videos weren’t found.
