Netherlands Introduces New Work Permit Regulations for Foreign Employees
(Bristol, UK) - The Netherlands has amended the Foreign Nationals (Employment) Act with changes
effective 1 January 2014. The amendment mainly affects work permits norms for applicants from
outside the European Economic Area (EEA), and outlines new hiring conditions for business entities that
hire foreign employees. The new regulations only allow a one-year work permit for foreign employees,
this may result in an additional burden on companies with foreign employees as they will need to renew
work permits more frequently, reports Nair & Co. International HR services.
Following are some additional changes introduced through the amendment:


In order to enjoy complete access to the labour market, the period for which certain categories
of workers from outside the EEA will require employment permits has been extended to five
years (from the previous three years).



Employers who have been convicted of violating labour laws may be denied a permit by the
Employee Insurance Agency (UWV).



The government may enforce employee quotas for certain industries.



Employers are required to pay competitive wages.
