Evaluation Task 1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?
A shot that shows a link between lyrics and/or music and visuals “Love is just a shackle I see” Listening to this lyric I thought that it should be represented by having the actor tied up and shown that he is in a “Shackle”. He is saying that love ties him down and I thought that it would be perfect that the audience could understand this by showing him tied up in guitar leads. “Go Get your shovel, and We’ll dig it deeper” Here we see a clear link between the lyrics of the song and the visuals. We see that in the foreground a man using his shovel to dig a big hole. This carries on throughout the music videos and signifies burying all of their problems.
A shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented This shot typifies how the record company would want their artist to be represented because it is a performance shot. The artist will be shown as a live performance and the record company will be thinking that the way to make money off of this artist will be in live concerts. So showing him with a guitar playing it and expressing himself with it will make the audience want to go to his shows and buy a ticket. Here in the music video “Misery Business” by Paramore we see that the band are being represented as the rebellious band with a lot of attitude. We see graffiti on the walls which backs up the idea that they will be represented as a moody teenage band with attitude. We also see that the front woman has orange hair, this is not typical hair colour s this also signifies that the band will be shown as rebellious.
A shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre We can see here with this opening shot that there is a prominent part to play by the instruments in the song. This illustrates the genre of this song because it is very much about the live sound and the playing of the instruments in this song. The singer songwriter genre really uses all of the instruments and I wanted to emphasise this by including some being played in my music video. Here in the music video by Radiohead called “Creep” we see the whole band playing their instruments. There are a lot of performance based shots in this video and this shows off the genre of music in a very good way. This music is all about the live aspects of the band and having the video in a live setting helps illustrate that.
A shot that shows an intertextual reference I decided to turn down the lights in the room to let the patterns of the curtains in the background shine through using the sunlight outside to do this. I have the actor dancing to the music in this scene to add a bit more of a relaxed laid back feel to the vide and also ends up adding a bit of humour. Here we see that the shadow of the artist is used in this shot rather like the one in my music video. This is in face Jami Liddell in another one of his videos, so I saw this idea and wanted to create something similar. I like how in the song the shadow figure has no personality and is just a plain being dancing along to the music. I have seen this in a music video and decided to use it in my video.
A shot that demonstrates your use of camera I have put the camera low down so that you are looking up to the artist. I thought that the stairs added some good angles and shapes in this shot and with the beam going straight up on the left makes the stars look very wacky and interesting. I also used this angle because the actor throws pills down on the floor and I wanted the audience feel as if they were the floor and that they have a perspective o that they can see that he has actually thrown the pills on the floor. Here we see in the music video for “Rootless Tree” by Ryan Adams that the camera is showing an extreme close up of the singers mouth. This makes the audience completely focus on the singing and signifies that the vocals are the most important part of the song.
A shot that demonstrates your use of lighting I have used an interesting lighting effect here by putting light bulbs into a sheet f material and then standing it up. I dipped the light so when I turned on these lights it would create a good effect. I think it worked well because it created a mysterious and groovy effect in the background. In the music video called “Ignorance” by Paramore the light bulb is used to a good effect. The bulb through out is treated a bit like the microphone and becomes the centre of attention throughout the music video. This adds an eerie and mysterious effect also on the music video.
A shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene I have decided to choose this screen shot because I wanted to show that the in the mise-en-scene where was a music studio kind of feel and with the drum kit in the background with the microphone stands and soundproofing ion the walls this makes you realise that the shot is in a music studio. I wanted to have this setting because it makes the audience realise that the music is a big part of the image of the artist. Here in the X factor music video there is a shot where the artist is singing in a studio setting, we can see the marshal guitar amp in the background along with the soundproofing on the walls and the music stand just t the left of the picture. This scene makes the audience realise that the artist I serious about their music and appeals to the more musical areas of the audiences.
Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos This close up of the singers mouth with the microphone in the foreground is a common shot and I have seen it a few times before in a music video. It gives a different and interesting perspective on the singer. Here in the “One” music video by Metallica we can see this same shot. There is a long introduction without vocals so when the vocals finally come in the artist wanted to be able to be seen singing. This close up shows the singing and stays onto him for a long time
Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos This angle of the guitar I thought that I had seen many times before in music videos and is a common shot. Here in the Pantera video for “5 minutes alone” we see this angle again. This is used because the guitarist in the band is one of the iconic and focused members. People like to see up close what the band members are doing with their instruments.
