After the release of InfoPath 2013 which had very little new functionality, there were, of course, suggestions that Microsoft was planning to retire InfoPath. At the end of January the SharePoint and Office community was hit with this not completely unexpected news…
(Cover points in slide)
We were, of course, asked what we thought of the news and frankly, we were keen to see what the details they promised would look like. In March, at SharePoint Convergence, Microsoft fleshed our their announcement and, frankly, we at Nintex applaud what they are trying to do. We see that Microsoft recognised that the retirement of InfoPath does leave a gap in the forms story for SharePoint and they are looking to fill that out.
Set the scene: This is the Msft view of forms for Office
Reframed the landscape of Forms for SharePoint. Essentially succeeded by 4 existing or in development products.
(Go through form types and expand on what they do, why they are considered important, and how Microsoft are investing)
Mostly framed, however, at data capture and storage.
Walt:
Recap what we covered today
Selection criteria
What are your internal customers really using forms for?
Is it really just for data collection?
Does the form need to be part of a bigger picture?
Do you need the form to drive processes?
Are there really multiple forms in the process?
Most every time you are collecting data it is for a reason.
Our view of the world is a bit different and I think a bit simpler. We look at everything as interconnected. Collecting data is always a means to an end and in most cases that end is going to be facilitated by a business process. We’re not saying that the business process has to be partially automated, but if it can be, you should look at how you can do that. Where is can’t be and you need some human intervention, that’s when User Interfaces for those processes make sense.
So we created Nintex Forms for that express reason… (talk to slide).
That said, there is some merit in Microsoft’s categorisation of different types of forms and, certainly, there are times when automating the process doesn’t have a very high priority in the organisation. Perhaps the volume doesn’t warrant it, perhaps the manual version is still highly economical. In that case, Nintex is still there as a by-product of the work we do to enable business processes we still offer a great deal in just the Data UI layer.
(Talk to slide)
Customization, branding and presentation logic to ensure that interfaces are engaging, and help the end-user enter data economically and correctly. That said, we make it easy to add business processes later with Nintex Workflow and to integrate with other LOB systems and cloud services with Nintex Live.
Lastly, we don’t want to say that structured documents don’t have a place. If that makes sense to your organisation and it may do, to have a document of record that can be signed and archived, then there are certainly solutions that make sense there as well.
(Talk to slide)
Again, these forms are unlikely to exist in a vacuum and when these documents need to be routed to different people and then perhaps sent off for archiving, that is a process in itself. And Nintex is there to help out.
Handover
Now I’ve spoken a lot about the world from a Forms point of view but I’ve also made some mention of workflow. I’ll hand over to Kelly now to talk our entire family of products come together to help businesses build solutions that make sense for them.
At a very high level, we’re talking about People, Processes, and Content (content meaning any information assets)…
And Nintex Live makes integrating with many services as easy as drag-and-drop.
In truth, it doesn’t even end there…
We don’t believe it’s workflow’s job to *DO* everything. It’s workflow’s job to *TALK TO* and *automate* everything. And a lot of companies have made sure their products work with ours…
