Lussier Community Education Center
Neighbors Helping Neighbors
2013 Annual Report
Deep Roots & Lofty Dreams
Dear friends and neighbors,
What does it mean to have deep roots? As we move from
celebrating five years in our building to honoring those who
thirty-five years ago planted the earliest seeds whose fruits we
enjoy today, the benefits of deep roots are on our mind.
As I write this, I am looking out my window at a group of our
kindergarteners sitting in the grass bent over a project with
paper, beads, and glue. One catches sight of an LCEC staff, jumps up, races over to
her, and lands something between a hug and a solid rugby tackle.
Our roots are deep enough that I know we will be here to walk beside this little girl
all through her childhood, to support her in school, explore state parks with her,
grow gardens with her, build rockets with her, write poetry with her, and choreograph
dances with her. And we will be here with her and her family to hug her again when
she graduates and heads off to college.
Deep roots mean we can reach higher and farther while keeping ourselves solidly
connected and stable. We stretch to get more healthy food into the hands of families
and more neighbors into jobs. We reach out and link up with schools, colleges,
businesses, and neighborhood, faith, and community groups to weave a canopy of
support over us all.
And it is a big, broad, diverse “we” that does all of that. We all have gifts to share.
As we reach for higher goals and strive to make an even deeper impact,
we hope you know that there is a place here for you – a place for you to learn and
grow, and a place for you to help make Madison a healthier and more just community.
Join us.
Sincerely,
Paul Terranova
LCEC Executive Director
Five Years Ago It Was a Dream...
Today it’s a place where
thousands of people come to
learn, grow, and share their gifts.
In 2013 we celebrated five
years since we first moved out
of three cramped apartments
in Wexford Ridge and into our
brand new facility on Gammon
Road. To commemorate this
milestone in our history, more than
300 of us gathered together at the
Center for our first annual
Harvest Celebration.

About the LCEC
The Lussier Community Education Center (LCEC) is an innovative, intergenerational,
green-built community education center open to the public on the west side of Madison,
Wisconsin. Previously known as the Wexford Ridge Neighborhood Center, the LCEC
has a decades-long track record of deep roots in the community, as well as strong
partnerships with schools, churches, businesses, and service agencies across the city.
The LCEC is located on the grounds of Jefferson Middle School and Memorial High
School and provides a variety of opportunities and services for adults and children of all
ages and backgrounds. The Center is a place for anyone to come share their gifts and
a focal point for community engagement, offering a variety of free educational, social,
recreational, and civic programs.
Why the Lussier Community
Education Center?
People often wonder what the
community education in our
name means. For us it starts
with the traditional definition
of community education -
taking learning outside the
walls of the school, bringing
community into the educational
process – and it goes much
farther. For us it is about all of
us growing from accidental
neighbors to community
members who know and take
care of one another. As we
begin to see each other more
clearly, call each other our own,
and act to build a fairer and
more vibrant community, we
become citizens. This is the
true meaning of community
education.

Taking Care of Our Youth
For over twenty years the free LCEC Children &
Youth Programs have been opening the minds of
children K-12 through academic enrichment, health,
arts, and service & leadership programming – and
opening doors to the future through college access
programming like the Buffett Scholars Program,
Creating Opportunities in Math, Engineering,
Technology and Science (COMETS) Program, and the
LEAP 2 College partnership with Edgewood College.
We currently offer three free afterschool programs:
• Elementary Afterschool Program
• Middle School Youth Resource Center
• High School Teen Build Up Program
First Annual Gallery Night
Our first annual Gallery Night
provided the opportunity for
children and youth to showcase the
visual and performance pieces they
created with artists in residence
in the Art a la Carte Program
supported by American Girl’s
Fund For Children and the City of
Madison Arts Commission. It was
also the occasion for the community
at large to gather together and
create their own art project at the
Center—individual mosaic tiles
which brighten the LCEC Wexford
Commons.

at Gallery Night, but once I did, it felt really good. I don’t usually get
the opportunity to do things like this—that’s one of the things I love

“One of my favorite parts of the job is
getting to know the elementary students
even though they aren’t in my program
yet. It is really great to start forming those
relationships early so that when they get
to middle school we already have a firm
base to start from.”
Daniel Steinbring, LCEC Youth Programs
Manager
The LCEC also offers an eight week Summer Camp to 60-90 K-12 children and
youth. Jam-packed with field trips, swimming lessons, healthy meals, gardening,
reading and many more fun activities, our free summer camp is something kids look
forward to every year!
Meet the 2013 Buffett Scholars!
The Jane Burrows Buffett Scholars
Program selects two 9th or 10th
graders every year and supports
their college aspirations through
high school and beyond. Scholars
are chosen on their commitment
to help others, determination
to overcome hardships, and a
demonstrated potential to attend an
institution of higher learning. The
fund was created in honor of Jane
Burrows Buffett, long time supporter
and advocate of the Center with
a generous gift by Jan and Bill
DeAtley and an anonymous donor.

Engaging our Community
The key role a community center plays in engaging people to share their gifts and grow
together cannot be underestimated. It is the underpinning of a strong and healthy
community. The LCEC is built upon a tradition of community organizing and continues
to support this mission through community
leadership, organizing, and volunteer programs.
Free monthly dinners that engage the whole
neighborhood, the MadWest Winter Farmer’s
Market, a variety of volunteer opportunities, and
ongoing leadership groups such as Grassroots
Engagement Mentors (GEMs) and Women Rise
Up! have made the LCEC a vehicle for people as
they move from resident to community member
to citizen since 1979.
The LCEC GEMS Project
Grassroots Engagement Mentors
(GEMS) is a year-long neighbor
engagement and action project.
Funded by the Capitol Area
Regional Planning Commission, the
project brings together dynamic
community members to:
• Learn about community
organizing, mobilization, and
action planning.
•Talk with neighbors about their
gifts, assets, what they value
about the community, and what
they wish to see improved.
• Discover potential adult and
youth leaders.
• Make community change with a
team of neighbors.
The GEMS project is based on
the idea that “life won’t get better
unless we make it better.”

“I like coming to the Center to learn how to prepare
and serve food with Ms. Vicki and Ms. Judy. I’ve
learned so much about cooking here and like to be
with my friends. Actually I just got a job, and I’m
using all the stuff I learned here there now. It’s really
exciting!”
Michael, LCEC Breakfast Club Cook
Building Employment Skills
The LCEC has always supported people in their quest to find employment. In the
last 10 years we formalized the Building Employment And Technology Skills (BEATS)
program to meet people where they are and bring together resources to help them in
their journey toward self-sufficiency. We accomplish this through work placements at
the Center, vocational education classes, individual assistance, and a fully operating
social enterprise which employs six young adults with disabilities.
BEATS Work Placements at the Center
The LCEC provides a supportive environment for people
to build professional skills and gain valuable experience.
Placements at the Center are provided in partnership
with Dane County Partners with Business, Wisconsin
Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, Greater
Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources and Wisconsin
Works Program.
Kid’s Café/Breakfast Club
Social Enterprise
This program provides vocational
training and employment
opportunities to young adults with
disabilities.
They in turn provide hot healthy
meals to kids in our programs
and a catered breakfast for a local
service club every week.
Bringing together the LCEC,
Kids Café (a national program of
Feeding America and Second
Harvest), the Madison Breakfast
Optimists Club, and James
Madison Memorial High School
Special Education Department,
this creative social enterprise helps
many young adults with disabilities
transition from school to the
workforce and makes it possible
for us to send hundreds of kids
away with happy bellies!

“I give a little of my time,
and I get so much in return.
I’ve met people here who I
consider my true friends.
This is such a gift.”
Jim Hebert,
Lussier Food Pantry Volunteer
Responding to Community Needs
Being able to support our community and respond to its needs is central to our
work here at the Center. Fighting hunger, assisting with housing matters, and
furthering adult education were some of the first priorities of the Wexford Ridge
Neighborhood Center. Today we uphold many of these traditions with the help of
countless volunteers and partners.
Volunteer-run programs include:
• The Lussier Food Pantry (open twice a week, 50 weeks a year)
• Food From Friends (twice a week, 50 weeks a year)
• BEATS Job Clinic, drop in resumé and employment assistance program
(twice a week, 50 weeks a year)
Community partners bring ESL, GED and other adult enrichment classes
to the Center.
The Center also hosts a variety of exercise
classes offered in partnership with Madison
School and Community Recreation (MSCR)
such as:
• Adaptive Fitness • Move to Lose!
• 50+ Fitness • Gentle Yoga
• Fit Family • Core Balance
• Adult Fitness
Food From Friends
Every Friday at noon this
volunteer-run gleaners program
offers fresh fruits and vegetables,
breads, and an assortment of
other perishable food items
donated by local businesses,
individuals, and grocery stores to
Madison residents. Started off the
porch of a Wexford resident many
years ago, the Food From Friends
program is one of the Center’s
longest lasting volunteer-run
programs.

LCEC 2013 Annual Report Neighbors Helping Neighbors

  • 1. Lussier Community Education Center Neighbors Helping Neighbors 2013 Annual Report
  • 2. Deep Roots & Lofty Dreams Dear friends and neighbors, What does it mean to have deep roots? As we move from celebrating five years in our building to honoring those who thirty-five years ago planted the earliest seeds whose fruits we enjoy today, the benefits of deep roots are on our mind. As I write this, I am looking out my window at a group of our kindergarteners sitting in the grass bent over a project with paper, beads, and glue. One catches sight of an LCEC staff, jumps up, races over to her, and lands something between a hug and a solid rugby tackle. Our roots are deep enough that I know we will be here to walk beside this little girl all through her childhood, to support her in school, explore state parks with her, grow gardens with her, build rockets with her, write poetry with her, and choreograph dances with her. And we will be here with her and her family to hug her again when she graduates and heads off to college. Deep roots mean we can reach higher and farther while keeping ourselves solidly connected and stable. We stretch to get more healthy food into the hands of families and more neighbors into jobs. We reach out and link up with schools, colleges, businesses, and neighborhood, faith, and community groups to weave a canopy of support over us all. And it is a big, broad, diverse “we” that does all of that. We all have gifts to share. As we reach for higher goals and strive to make an even deeper impact, we hope you know that there is a place here for you – a place for you to learn and grow, and a place for you to help make Madison a healthier and more just community. Join us. Sincerely, Paul Terranova LCEC Executive Director Five Years Ago It Was a Dream... Today it’s a place where thousands of people come to learn, grow, and share their gifts. In 2013 we celebrated five years since we first moved out of three cramped apartments in Wexford Ridge and into our brand new facility on Gammon Road. To commemorate this milestone in our history, more than 300 of us gathered together at the Center for our first annual Harvest Celebration. What do you want your legacy to be?
  • 3. About the LCEC The Lussier Community Education Center (LCEC) is an innovative, intergenerational, green-built community education center open to the public on the west side of Madison, Wisconsin. Previously known as the Wexford Ridge Neighborhood Center, the LCEC has a decades-long track record of deep roots in the community, as well as strong partnerships with schools, churches, businesses, and service agencies across the city. The LCEC is located on the grounds of Jefferson Middle School and Memorial High School and provides a variety of opportunities and services for adults and children of all ages and backgrounds. The Center is a place for anyone to come share their gifts and a focal point for community engagement, offering a variety of free educational, social, recreational, and civic programs. Why the Lussier Community Education Center? People often wonder what the community education in our name means. For us it starts with the traditional definition of community education - taking learning outside the walls of the school, bringing community into the educational process – and it goes much farther. For us it is about all of us growing from accidental neighbors to community members who know and take care of one another. As we begin to see each other more clearly, call each other our own, and act to build a fairer and more vibrant community, we become citizens. This is the true meaning of community education. LCEC by the Numbers in 2013… 3121 center users 7707 programming hours Please consider including the LCEC in your estate plans.
  • 4. Taking Care of Our Youth For over twenty years the free LCEC Children & Youth Programs have been opening the minds of children K-12 through academic enrichment, health, arts, and service & leadership programming – and opening doors to the future through college access programming like the Buffett Scholars Program, Creating Opportunities in Math, Engineering, Technology and Science (COMETS) Program, and the LEAP 2 College partnership with Edgewood College. We currently offer three free afterschool programs: • Elementary Afterschool Program • Middle School Youth Resource Center • High School Teen Build Up Program First Annual Gallery Night Our first annual Gallery Night provided the opportunity for children and youth to showcase the visual and performance pieces they created with artists in residence in the Art a la Carte Program supported by American Girl’s Fund For Children and the City of Madison Arts Commission. It was also the occasion for the community at large to gather together and create their own art project at the Center—individual mosaic tiles which brighten the LCEC Wexford Commons. Number of hours of programming offered to children and youth at the LCEC in 2013 3970 What do you want your legacy to be? LCEC Children and Youth Program Participant Demographics African American Latino/a White Multiracial Asian 57.6% 16.2% 16.2% 7.1% “It was hard to get my courage up to sing in front of all those people at Gallery Night, but once I did, it felt really good. I don’t usually get the opportunity to do things like this—that’s one of the things I love about the Center.” Antasia, LCEC Teen Build Up Participant
  • 5. Number of children and youth enrolled in LCEC programs in 2013 667 Number of hot, healthy meals served to children and youth in LCEC programs in 2013 7267 “One of my favorite parts of the job is getting to know the elementary students even though they aren’t in my program yet. It is really great to start forming those relationships early so that when they get to middle school we already have a firm base to start from.” Daniel Steinbring, LCEC Youth Programs Manager The LCEC also offers an eight week Summer Camp to 60-90 K-12 children and youth. Jam-packed with field trips, swimming lessons, healthy meals, gardening, reading and many more fun activities, our free summer camp is something kids look forward to every year! Meet the 2013 Buffett Scholars! The Jane Burrows Buffett Scholars Program selects two 9th or 10th graders every year and supports their college aspirations through high school and beyond. Scholars are chosen on their commitment to help others, determination to overcome hardships, and a demonstrated potential to attend an institution of higher learning. The fund was created in honor of Jane Burrows Buffett, long time supporter and advocate of the Center with a generous gift by Jan and Bill DeAtley and an anonymous donor. Kwanique Vargas (15) and Zildjian Salupen (14), 2013 Buffett Scholars Please consider including the LCEC in your estate plans.
  • 6. Number of meals served at LCEC community dinners in 2013 798 “I love cooking community dinner with Kim. We try to get everyone to join so they can see new faces and meet new friends at the Center. And everyone leaves happy with a full belly!” Jeanice Franklin, LCEC Community Dinner Cook Engaging our Community The key role a community center plays in engaging people to share their gifts and grow together cannot be underestimated. It is the underpinning of a strong and healthy community. The LCEC is built upon a tradition of community organizing and continues to support this mission through community leadership, organizing, and volunteer programs. Free monthly dinners that engage the whole neighborhood, the MadWest Winter Farmer’s Market, a variety of volunteer opportunities, and ongoing leadership groups such as Grassroots Engagement Mentors (GEMs) and Women Rise Up! have made the LCEC a vehicle for people as they move from resident to community member to citizen since 1979. The LCEC GEMS Project Grassroots Engagement Mentors (GEMS) is a year-long neighbor engagement and action project. Funded by the Capitol Area Regional Planning Commission, the project brings together dynamic community members to: • Learn about community organizing, mobilization, and action planning. •Talk with neighbors about their gifts, assets, what they value about the community, and what they wish to see improved. • Discover potential adult and youth leaders. • Make community change with a team of neighbors. The GEMS project is based on the idea that “life won’t get better unless we make it better.” Number of hours completed by 223 volunteers at the Center in 2013 5086 What do you want your legacy to be? Reading Buddies Program Reading Buddies come in weekly to read one-on-one and play literacy games with elementary children.
  • 7. Percentage of Breakfast Club/Kid’s Café participants who found additional employment in 2013 after participating in the program 75% “I like coming to the Center to learn how to prepare and serve food with Ms. Vicki and Ms. Judy. I’ve learned so much about cooking here and like to be with my friends. Actually I just got a job, and I’m using all the stuff I learned here there now. It’s really exciting!” Michael, LCEC Breakfast Club Cook Building Employment Skills The LCEC has always supported people in their quest to find employment. In the last 10 years we formalized the Building Employment And Technology Skills (BEATS) program to meet people where they are and bring together resources to help them in their journey toward self-sufficiency. We accomplish this through work placements at the Center, vocational education classes, individual assistance, and a fully operating social enterprise which employs six young adults with disabilities. BEATS Work Placements at the Center The LCEC provides a supportive environment for people to build professional skills and gain valuable experience. Placements at the Center are provided in partnership with Dane County Partners with Business, Wisconsin Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources and Wisconsin Works Program. Kid’s Café/Breakfast Club Social Enterprise This program provides vocational training and employment opportunities to young adults with disabilities. They in turn provide hot healthy meals to kids in our programs and a catered breakfast for a local service club every week. Bringing together the LCEC, Kids Café (a national program of Feeding America and Second Harvest), the Madison Breakfast Optimists Club, and James Madison Memorial High School Special Education Department, this creative social enterprise helps many young adults with disabilities transition from school to the workforce and makes it possible for us to send hundreds of kids away with happy bellies! Please consider including the LCEC in your estate plans.
  • 8. “I give a little of my time, and I get so much in return. I’ve met people here who I consider my true friends. This is such a gift.” Jim Hebert, Lussier Food Pantry Volunteer Responding to Community Needs Being able to support our community and respond to its needs is central to our work here at the Center. Fighting hunger, assisting with housing matters, and furthering adult education were some of the first priorities of the Wexford Ridge Neighborhood Center. Today we uphold many of these traditions with the help of countless volunteers and partners.
