Noise and Training Advisory for July 9-15, 2012: Training scheduled for 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., July 10-15, has the potential for noise in some of the
surrounding areas. These areas may include: Bala, Keats and Riley. A lesser chance for significant noise remains for the Manhattan area. In
addition to the above, training scheduled for 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., July 11-12, has the potential for noise in the Fort Riley housing areas and Junction
City. http://www.riley.army.mil/NewsViewer.aspx?id=1785

Division jazz band to perform at festival: The Little Apple Jazz Festival will be grooving from 6 p.m. to 11p.m. July 14 at the Larry Norvell Band
Shell, City Park, Manhattan. The free event will have music groups and artists including Panorama, Watermelon Slim, Doug Talley, Kansas State
University Jazz Combo and Fort Riley’s own 1st Infantry Division Jazz Band. The jazz band will be performing on the Directorate of Family and
Morale, Welfare and Recreation stage at the City Park from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. “Although we’re a jazz group we get popular tunes that perhaps
you hear on the radio and we make it sound like instrumental jazz – like we’re going to be playing Radiohead. I’m not kidding,” said Staff Sgt.
Andre Goncalves, musician and operations noncommissioned officer in charge, 1st Inf. Div. Band. “One of the tunes I think people are going to
end up digging is “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash. We rearranged it in a different time signature; it’s pretty cool.” Goncalves and the jazz band try
to play a mixture of varieties to suit all musical tastes during performances, he said. “We love to play the traditional stuff. With that being said,
audiences nowadays are very peculiar in what they (want to) hear because there are so many options. So, what we try to do is get a little bit of
everything and offer jazz through the different diversity that they hear,” he said. This will be the first time 1st Inf. Div. Jazz Band will be
performing at the event. The band was unable to participate in previous years because they were deployed as a unit, Goncalves said. This time,
however, only half of the band is deployed, and the jazz band will be able to perform at the festival. The band consists of four members and
includes a drummer, trumpet player, saxophone player and Gonclaves, who plays the bass and guitar simultaneously. “It’s fun; it’s really fun,” he
said. Goncalves hopes to have a lot of support from Fort Riley at the event. “I would encourage everybody to come out and listen to a very
original way to play jazz with tunes that they might actually know and might have heard on the radio,” Goncalves said. “We put some work into
it, and hopefully they’ll like it.” By Calun Reece 1st Inf. Div. Post

FREE MILITARY SUICIDE PREVENTION PHONE APP: MilitaryFamily.com has developed a suicide prevention smart phone and Android version
free application called OPERATION REACHOUT to address the problem of suicide among the military and veterans. The application can be found
at http://militaryfamily.com/downloads/apps/military-suicide-prevention-operation-reach-out or through the iTunes store. Designed by experts
in emotional resiliency the application has five features:
         1. A help center where a single touch of the phone will call a friend, family member or helping professional including the National
         Suicide Hotline.
         2. Video vignettes designed to help people who are depressed see that their problems are solvable and their feelings of desperation
         will pass.
         3. Video vignettes for people concerned about someone who they believe is suicidal; telling them what they should and should not
         say.
         4. Suggestions of activities that will help people reach out to someone else rather than suffer alone.
         5. Internet resources including real stories from people who once thought about suicide, but went on to get help.
The primary author of the app is psychologist Lawrence Shapiro, Ph.D. a well-know author and internationally respected expert on emotional
resiliency. When asked how the app works, Dr. Shapiro explains: "The app is designed to help people who are feeling desperate and alone
connect with others. Having powerful resources in your pocket or purse is the surest way to help get help when they need it most. The most
important thing the app can do is to redirect a suicidal person's downward spiral of hopelessness and isolation. Help is available from many
places and we need to find as quickly and easily as possible."

We are always up and posting new information on FaceBook! Join us on the Official 1HBCT FaceBook Page at www.facebook.com/1HBCTDEVILBRIGADE?v=wall&ref-sgm Fort Riley Current News Updates: This information has recently been updated, and is now available. http://www.riley.army.mil/OurPost/CurrentNews.aspx In addition to the Current News page there are Garrison Commander's Community Corner articles http://www.riley.army.mil/DocumentList.aspx?lib=GC-Corner Noise and Training Advisory for July 9-15, 2012: Training scheduled for 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., July 10-15, has the potential for noise in some of the surrounding areas. These areas may include: Bala, Keats and Riley. A lesser chance for significant noise remains for the Manhattan area. In addition to the above, training scheduled for 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., July 11-12, has the potential for noise in the Fort Riley housing areas and Junction City. http://www.riley.army.mil/NewsViewer.aspx?id=1785 Division jazz band to perform at festival: The Little Apple Jazz Festival will be grooving from 6 p.m. to 11p.m. July 14 at the Larry Norvell Band Shell, City Park, Manhattan. The free event will have music groups and artists including Panorama, Watermelon Slim, Doug Talley, Kansas State University Jazz Combo and Fort Riley’s own 1st Infantry Division Jazz Band. The jazz band will be performing on the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation stage at the City Park from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. “Although we’re a jazz group we get popular tunes that perhaps you hear on the radio and we make it sound like instrumental jazz – like we’re going to be playing Radiohead. I’m not kidding,” said Staff Sgt. Andre Goncalves, musician and operations noncommissioned officer in charge, 1st Inf. Div. Band. “One of the tunes I think people are going to end up digging is “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash. We rearranged it in a different time signature; it’s pretty cool.” Goncalves and the jazz band try to play a mixture of varieties to suit all musical tastes during performances, he said. “We love to play the traditional stuff. With that being said, audiences nowadays are very peculiar in what they (want to) hear because there are so many options. So, what we try to do is get a little bit of everything and offer jazz through the different diversity that they hear,” he said. This will be the first time 1st Inf. Div. Jazz Band will be
  • 2. performing at the event. The band was unable to participate in previous years because they were deployed as a unit, Goncalves said. This time, however, only half of the band is deployed, and the jazz band will be able to perform at the festival. The band consists of four members and includes a drummer, trumpet player, saxophone player and Gonclaves, who plays the bass and guitar simultaneously. “It’s fun; it’s really fun,” he said. Goncalves hopes to have a lot of support from Fort Riley at the event. “I would encourage everybody to come out and listen to a very original way to play jazz with tunes that they might actually know and might have heard on the radio,” Goncalves said. “We put some work into it, and hopefully they’ll like it.” By Calun Reece 1st Inf. Div. Post FREE MILITARY SUICIDE PREVENTION PHONE APP: MilitaryFamily.com has developed a suicide prevention smart phone and Android version free application called OPERATION REACHOUT to address the problem of suicide among the military and veterans. The application can be found at http://militaryfamily.com/downloads/apps/military-suicide-prevention-operation-reach-out or through the iTunes store. Designed by experts in emotional resiliency the application has five features: 1. A help center where a single touch of the phone will call a friend, family member or helping professional including the National Suicide Hotline. 2. Video vignettes designed to help people who are depressed see that their problems are solvable and their feelings of desperation will pass. 3. Video vignettes for people concerned about someone who they believe is suicidal; telling them what they should and should not say. 4. Suggestions of activities that will help people reach out to someone else rather than suffer alone. 5. Internet resources including real stories from people who once thought about suicide, but went on to get help. The primary author of the app is psychologist Lawrence Shapiro, Ph.D. a well-know author and internationally respected expert on emotional resiliency. When asked how the app works, Dr. Shapiro explains: "The app is designed to help people who are feeling desperate and alone connect with others. Having powerful resources in your pocket or purse is the surest way to help get help when they need it most. The most important thing the app can do is to redirect a suicidal person's downward spiral of hopelessness and isolation. Help is available from many places and we need to find as quickly and easily as possible."
