SMART tool for a Smart Talk
By Nuwan Rajapaksha
Communication though it is the number one skill a human being should
possess, many finds it difficult to use it effectively in different
environments. Some are comfortable in communicating in their
comfortable zones and some finds it difficult anywhere.
Communication is not one way and it has to have at least two or more
interested groups. After going through many reasons and ideas why
people finds it difficult to communicate, the following model was
developed to win a conversation.
Winning a conversation and dominating a conversation are two
different .No one would like to be dominated by any or be defeated,
therefore any conversation we make has to be win-win or both the
parties should feel fair at the end. That’s when you win the business,
not when you dominate.
SMART tool is designed to win a conversation while building the next
move positive. SMART consists of five operations and the name SMART
is made out of the first letters of those five.
Sis about being sincere in approach.
People would like to get respected and if you are to get it back you
should give it genuinely. Your body language, tone has to be used in a
manner to let the audience feel that you are open and flexible.
When I was working for an automobile company I found a security
officer (Kamal), who is a difficult person to get on with. Everyone goes
against him since he never supported any of them except for one .The
one person who he was in good terms was never a big shot of the
company but an ordinary executive.
One day I thought of listening to a conversation between an employee
who is against Kamal and to a conversation that of between the Person
who is good with Kamal. Every time when Kamal raise his voice the
normal employee goes ahead of him. But the other never does it, he
not only stay calm but bring Kamal to his normal senses and more
importantly get the work done. While everyone else try to be on the
top of the situation Saman try to equal the situation with the intention
of getting the work done and he always wins. Therefore Sincerity wins
the situation while lack of sincerity loses it.
When you communicate make sure you use a sincere approach to win
the hearts of the audience and the business as well.
Mis the memorable point.
The reason to communicate is to pass a message or a point. Just passing
the message is not enough, based on that the receiving party has to act
in a positive behavior in the way the communicator wants.
But to make it more accurate the message or the point passed has to
be remembered. It is said people don’t remember statements but they
remember the incident that associate with it. Therefore every time
support your point with a story and bring your point through that story.
Ais for artistic Delivery
Actions speak louder than words. And when you communicate it is not
only the verbal communication, the vocal and visual communication
also gets involved.
In fact it is the vocal and visual communication that adds a better value
in communicating than the words spoken, what matters in not what
you say it but how you say it. Therefore adding purposeful body
language and voice modulation with proper synchronization with words
makes your delivery an art.
Ris for revolutionized content
I had a problem when I was growing up. That was every time when I say
something I had to repeat it to be understood by another. Simple
reason was I never had a proper flow in what I said.
Simply my content was not properly organized. But when I started
practicing speeches in toastmasters it helped me to find a way to
express my ideas even in one to one conversations with a flow or a
structure.
And when you find that next step is to develop that structure in such a
way that can create a revolution in the minds of the listeners’. For that
the content has to be logical enough. A logical Content or a structure
can create a revolution simply because it makes your argument visible
and clear.
Tis for trustworthy.
I have seen some speakers speak with guilty or lack of confidence. They
are not sure of what they speak. From the moment the audience feel it
the trust they had with the speaker is lost.
Once the trust is lost how much sincere you become, artistic delivery
you have and having stories to make your message memorable will
never create a revolution.
Therefore proper practice and speak on a subject that you have been a
part of or a theory you have not just learnt but also applied and
experienced will help you to build the credibility and thereby let the
audience to trust you.
