REGISTRATION BY NATURE WEBSITE USERS
When registering on nature.com, the user is prompted to confirm whether they have an ORCiD. Checking “Yes” or “No”
prompts the user to create or enter their ORCiD.

REGISTRATION BY NPG AUTHORS—STEP 1: MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
In eJournal Press, the author has the option to create or insert their ORCiD while submitting the manuscript. Once
registered, the author is directed to the ORCiD site to create an ORCiD and link to their account. After this step is
completed, the ORCiD becomes part of the author profile.

STEP 2: RETRIEVING CO-AUTHOR DATA
In eJournal Press, the ORCiD may be entered to retrieve and autopopulate the fields in the submission form. By entering
the ORCiD and clicking “Find Person”, corresponding authors can easily add information for co-authors who have already
registered their ORCiD within our system; however, they cannot register or validate an ORCiD for a co-author on their
behalf. (In this example, the ORCiD has been added for the co-author of the paper.)

STEP 3: EXPORT INTO PRODUCTION TRACKING SYSTEM
Once this information has been entered in eJournal Press and the manuscript has been accepted, the manuscript is
exported into the production tracking system (PTS). (Nature Publishing Group uses several different PTS, but for this
presentation we’ll focus on Aries ProduXion Manager.) The export into the PTS generates an XML document containing
the author and co-authors’ names, affiliations and ORCiDs. This document becomes part of the original submission files
for the manuscript along with the original figures, manuscript, supplementary information, etc.

STEP 4: XML ADDED TO MANUSCRIPT
When the submission has been edited and is ready for typesetting, the Author Meta Data XML document containing the
author names, affiliations and ORCiDs, is assigned to the typesetting team that will eventually create the XML for the
manuscript. At present the typesetters obtain the ORCiDs manually from the Author Meta Data XML file.

STEP 5: ORCiD ADDED TO HTML
If the ORCiD tag is present in the article XML file (example: auid type=”orcid” id=”http://orcid.org/0000-0002-0084-
9130”/), our builder will create a link to the author’s ORCiD page in the author information box. During the Advance
Online Publication (AOP) or issue go live, data is automatically sent to third-party vendors such as CrossRef and
PubMed containing the paper’s DOI plus author information, including any ORCiDs that were provided through eJP
during the submission process.

STEP 7: LINK TO ORCiD SITE
From the journal website, the user clicks on the ORCiD and is brought to the author’s publicly available information on the
ORCiD website. The accuracy and completeness of the record in regard to the author’s publications, grants or patents in
the public profile are solely the responsibility of the author.

Concluding statements
• NPG is actively promoting and supporting the use of ORCiDs with authors upon
account creation in eJP and throughout the manuscript submission and acceptance
processes.
• Although our current process (including the combination of eJP and PTS systems)
requires manual handling of ORCiDs by our typesetter, a more integrated system
could allow that to be automated.
• Even with the one manual step, our process is straightforward and efficient for
NPG staff.
• NPG is currently incorporating ORCiDs into numerous journals; our remaining
journals use an older DTD that doesn’t yet support ORCiDs. For those journals
we do provide ORCiDs to third-party vendors (CrossRef, PubMed) via the standard
data sends.
