FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Students across Ontario inspire others to help ChangeTheWorld
during the 7th
Annual Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge
April 24, 2014 - ONTARIO – The ChangeTheWorld - Ontario Volunteer Youth Challenge is officially at its halfway
mark. Launched on Sunday, April 6th
, 2014, the kick-off at the start of National Volunteer week,
ChangeTheWorld is a call to action for youth aged 14 to 18 years to volunteer through a wide variety of exciting
community initiatives. Funded by the Government of Ontario, in partnership with the Ontario Volunteer Centre
Network (OVCN), youth are being challenged to “change the world” and make a difference in their community.
With the support of 23 participating Volunteer Centres across Ontario, youth have taken their passions,
interests, and causes they believe in and have created events and activities within their local schools and
communities, while earning the hours they need to graduate from high school.
“Now that we are at the midway point of the campaign, we have witnessed numerous innovative and inspiring
events taking place,” states Carine Strong, Chair of the Ontario Volunteer Centre Network. “We are encouraged
by the thousands of youth who have already volunteered their time to make a difference. The momentum and
excitement is building and with another three weeks to go, we would like to encourage all high school youth to
connect with their local Volunteer Centres to see how they can participate to help ChangeTheWorld.”
Last year the goal was to encourage 30,000 youth to participate in the campaign which was exceeded. This year
the hope is to do it again with a new goal set to reach 33,000 students to volunteer for a minimum of 3 hours.
The campaign has been extended to six weeks to provide youth more time to volunteer and make a difference in
their communities. From car washes, food drives, sports competitions, and even dance parties to raise
awareness for mental health, these are just a few of the types of events that have taken place, or will be taking
place within the weeks remaining. The campaign wraps up on Monday, May 19th
2014. For a list of participating
